According to a global survey, 92% of knowledge workers regularly work in the evenings and on weekends. This feels like a huge step backward. Every major tech advancement—especially in how we communicate and collaborate—promised to free our days from the drudgery of the 9–5. Instead, we’re putting in more hours than ever, working earlier and later, and letting work spill into our weekends.
The Email Trap
A survey from RescueTime reveals that 34% of people check their email as soon as they wake up, while another 47% do so within the first 30 minutes. Fewer than 10% of people wait an hour or longer before checking. This habit leads to context switching, which can kill up to 80% of your productive time each day.
Checking email early and often puts you in reactive mode. Instead of prioritizing your most important tasks, you’re thrown into crisis mode, dealing with “urgent” updates and tasks. This shift means more time spent on communication and less time on meaningful work.
What’s Getting in the Way of Finishing Your Daily Tasks?
The short answer: too much work, unclear priorities, and personal obligations. We often fall victim to the planning fallacy—an overly optimistic view of what we can accomplish in a day, leading us to overcommit. All of this results in increased stress and decreased productivity.
The Toll of Overworking
The relentless pace of work has tangible impacts on our well-being. More time spent working doesn't necessarily equate to better results. In fact, it often leads to burnout, reduced creativity, and lower overall productivity. The constant pressure leaves us feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and disconnected from the things that truly matter in life—our health, relationships, and personal fulfillment.

The Solution?
Enjoy Your Weekend
Remember, true productivity isn't about the number of hours you work but the quality and impact of those hours. Take time for yourself, enjoy your weekends, and return to work refreshed and ready to tackle your priorities.
