Are you willing to fail to succeed?

Technological change is accelerating, in the 21st century we're forecasted to experience the equivalent of 20,000 years of change. I think that's worth saying again - 20,000 years of change over the next 76 years.?The clinicians?that will succeed won't be the smartest, or the hardest working, they will be the clinics?that were able to keep up with this pace of change - the clinics with the highest failure rate. Will you lean in or lean out of?technology?

On a chilly winter day along the coast of North Carolina, two brothers achieved a groundbreaking feat. On December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright successfully piloted their unconventional flying machine for 12 seconds, covering a distance of 120 feet.

In less than eight years, another milestone in aviation history unfolded when Cal Rodgers embarked on the first transcontinental flight across the United States.Fifteen years thereafter, on May 20, 1927, Charles Lindbergh accomplished the first solo, non-stop transatlantic flight in history. Guiding the Spirit of St. Louis from New York to Paris, Lindbergh's achievement marked a monumental moment in aviation. Fast forward through seven U.S. presidencies, and humanity set foot on the moon, symbolising the extraordinary progress in space exploration. (Watch Hidden Figures to see how NASA’s team were able to keep up with the pace of failure to finally achieve success).?

For us this historical journey serves as a reminder of how advancements have reshaped industries over time all across the world. However, as we reflect on these examples, it becomes evident that the pace of technological change?has led to different types of transformations affecting the future of our economy and professions. While technology may not have evolved rapidly over the past few decades in some aspects, the changes it has brought are profound. As we focus on the present, artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as a pivotal force, poised to disrupt various sectors, including healthcare and manual therapy. Just look back to the Pandemic where tele-health became the norm for those clinicians willing to pivot temporarily.

In contrast to the early 20th century, where technological innovations centred around aviation, today's landscape is defined by AI's transformative impact. The role of human labor in healthcare, particularly manual therapy, is undergoing a paradigm shift. The emphasis is now on understanding how AI alters the dynamics of human work in this sector, requiring practitioners to adapt to new challenges and opportunities.Soft skills such as empathy, humour, and tactful communication are becoming increasingly crucial in manual therapy professions. Jobs are evolving to be more relational and interpersonal, creating a demand for practitioners who can navigate the delicate balance between technology and human connection.

As we navigate the 21st century, AI and robotics, while not entirely new, are poised to affect nearly every aspect of healthcare and manual therapy. The integration of machines with the ability to learn and adapt will impact nearly half of the jobs in these fields.

So I ask again, Will you embrace change? In the words of Patrick Lor, partner at Panache Ventures, "AI won't take your job. People that use AI will take your job. And companies that are better at using AI will kill your company." This underscores the importance for healthcare manual therapists to embrace and skillfully utilise AI, recognising its potential to enhance patient care and outcomes.

As we stand on the brink of a new era in healthcare, will you navigate the evolving landscape, leveraging AI to enrich your practice and ensure a harmonious integration of technology and human touch. We need to normalise failure in business, to ensure we are pushing boundaries and working towards a brighter future.

So ask yourself, what are you willing to fail at today to achieve success?
