You are what you think.

You are what you think.

“Every action’s ancestor is a thought.”

You are what you think.

?

Human beings have between 60-80 thousand thoughts each day, and we naturally tend to focus on the negative. This is why consciously directing our thoughts towards positivity and growth is crucial.

?

If you constantly think a certain way, you’ll start to feel that way.

?

If you constantly feel a certain way, you’ll start to act that way.

?

If you constantly act a certain way, that becomes your personality.

?

Your thoughts shape who you are.?

This started to really resonate with me in my late 30s/early 40s.

Growth Over Comfort

Who you surround yourself with, what you read, listen to, watch, and focus on - it all matters. What you say and what you do matters, all the time. From my college days to my mid-30s, it seemed like it was the same shit, different day. Looking back, I'm not sure how much I grew as a person. So many surface-level conversations during happy hours and parties, so many conversations with people who likely forgot what we talked about, including myself. So many hangovers, so much unnecessary drama, so much wasted time. For the past five years, I've said no to almost all social scenes, and I have no regrets.

Nowadays, I keep it simple - I simply stay away from people, information, and scenes that do not help with my growth. Period. It makes life and decision-making so much easier, while I keep getting better every day.

Books have been a key part of my learning process and continue to be. Here are a few that come top of mind:

?

?? “The Gap and the Gain” by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy: Focuses on understanding the difference between where you are and where you want to be (the “gap”) and recognizing your progress and achievements (the “gain”). It aligns well with cultivating a positive mindset and recognizing personal growth.

?

?? “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” by Carol S. Dweck: Focuses on fixed versus growth mindsets, and exploring how our beliefs about our abilities shape our success. This directly relates to how thoughts influence our actions and personality.

?? “The Mountain is You” by Brianna Wiest: Discusses self-sabotage and how to overcome it. It’s about changing your mindset to overcome the obstacles you place in your own way, tying into the idea of how thoughts and actions are interconnected.
