“You Are What You Say…”
By Michelle Medlock Adams????????????
As Christian writers, we should understand the power of our words more than any other group; however, we tend to focus on what we write, and not so much on what we speak. I am guilty of that, too. But, in recent years, I have come to understand the power of spoken words. I have learned that we cannot speak words of defeat and failure and expect to live in victory.???????????
This isn’t something I made up…it’s scriptural.
Proverbs18:21 says, Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.???????????
In other words, we get what we say.???????????
As writers, we must see ourselves as published, happy, successful, and effective for the special calling on our lives. Writers, more than any other professionals, need to speak positively about us because we live in a world of rejection.
With more than 30 years as a professional writer under my belt, I have enough rejection letters to wallpaper most of my office…but that’s okay.???????????
Because without rejection, there would never be publishing success.???????????

Without a test, there would never be a testimony.???????????
So, celebrate those rejection letters. In fact, save every one of your rejection letters in a special folder.?
Why? Because they are proof that you’re out there, working in the field that you love!
They are proof that you are continually trying to make it in the tough world of publishing. They are evidence that you’re writing on a consistent basis.????????????
When God called me to write my book, 'Little Lessons From a Big God: Finding More of God Through the Lives of Our Children,' I wrote each page joyfully. I just knew that because God had given me the idea and helped me craft the words that I would have publishers fighting over my manuscript.???????????
Well, that didn’t exactly happen.???????????
In fact, the book was rejected 62 times before a publisher took a chance on it.???????????
What if I had given up on Rejection #60?
I wouldn’t have that book in print, ministering to Moms all over the world.
Yes, it was difficult to not get discouraged as the rejection letters filled my mailbox, but I just kept speaking positive words over that manuscript, and eventually those words and my persistence came together for a beautiful ending.???????????
Maybe you’re struggling with rejection right now.
Maybe you’ve been saying things like, “I am never going to get published. I might as well see if McDonald’s is hiring because this writing thing just isn’t working out.”???????????
Listen, we’ve all been there, but don’t give up!
The Word of God says that you can do all things through Christ who gives you strength. If you’re going to live in victory, you have to learn to speak positively about your life and your writing ministry.???????????
Remember, your words frame your world.
So, speak good things and watch your world begin to change for the better.
