Happy Monday, friends!
There’s a reason why certain songs hit you right in the gut—it’s because music has the power to say what we sometimes can’t.
You know that feeling when you hear a song, and it feels like it was written just for you? That’s because music speaks in a language deeper than words. It holds our stories, our struggles, and our triumphs in ways that everyday conversations never could.
And when we create music ourselves? That’s where the real magic happens. That's why I wrote some of the songs I talked about in my second TEDx Talk: From Pain to Playlist - Turning Struggles into Song.
But I don't want to talk about my process.
I mean, I get it. Most musicians are rather ego-centered [ha! I don't mean no harm, but]... but when 2020 hit: I wanted to move away from the "me" and spend more time in the "we", which is why I’ve spent the last six years specifically worked with songwriting clients who walked into my sessions feeling stuck in their pain — holding onto emotions too heavy to carry alone.
One of my latest clients is an insanely gifted young woman. She’s smart, creative, and unapologetically herself — but because she doesn’t conform to expectations, she’s often labeled as “the trouble kid.” She’s been ostracized, misunderstood, and judged for her appearance rather than her mind. And let’s be real, that wears on a person.
Through our sessions, she started putting those feelings into lyrics, and last week, she finished her first-ever song. A song that finally gave voice to the way she’s been feeling:
“It feels like a box with no air I’m not allowed to grow or change I’m either screwed for fitting in Or screwed to just be this way”
And this line hit me so hard:
“They see a broken gear They think I’m not where I’m supposed to be But I know myself I’m done trying to appease your misunderstandings of me.”
This is the power of music.
It’s not just about melodies and words—it’s about taking your story and turning it into something you own. It’s about transforming pain into something strong, tangible, and freeing instead of something that keeps you stuck.
This isn’t just me saying this — there’s actual science behind it. Music has been shown to:
In my latest blog, I break down exactly why music has this kind of power—and how YOU can use it to process emotions, reduce stress, and turn your pain into purpose.
Exciting Announcements: What’s Coming Up!
Whether it’s through a song, a melody, or simply reclaiming your voice—never forget that you are more powerful than your pain.
Can’t wait to connect!
Have an amazing day on purpose,
Emma G
