You Went to a Networking Event, and Came Away with Nothing
It happens all the time. People go to networking events and the evening ends in disappointment, leaving attendees wondering why they wasted their time to go. What's the problem? Having gone to events for many years, I have made observations and formed conclusions.
Here are some of the reasons networking events don't produce results for attendees.
1) Unrealistic expectations- Events are not designed as prospecting opportunities. Instead, they are marketing and awareness opportunities. Give a sales pitch, and blow an opportunity for a potentially valuable relationship. The biggest turnoff for attendees, is to be approached by someone who is in selling mode. Don't be one on those who everyone remembers for the wrong reasons.
2) No strategy- If you don't go into an event with a strategy and a plan, you will get nothing from the event. Know in general who you wish to meet. Talk to them, and determine what next steps to take, if any. Personally, I'm looking for qualified prospects and centers of influence. The event itself is just the first step toward building a relationship with them.
3) Fear- You go to an event and stand in the corner while everyone else is shaking hands and having quality conversations. You leave the event guilt ridden, and reluctant to attend another one. You must overcome that fear if you ever hope to derive any benefit from networking events.
There are so many nuances which help to shape the outcome of your networking experience. Showing up is not nearly enough.

9 年Great reminder Don! I always ask people how I can help them. Are there people in certain professions that they would like to connect with? And if they don't mention a profession that came to my mind I'll say, "Have you ever thought about....?" I do this because it makes me feel good if I can connect 2 people that will get mutual benefit out of knowing each other. Plus somewhere down the road they might meet someone who can be of benefit to my business and they'll remember to make the connection.
