If you want to stay in Kolkata and still prosper, here's a formula that I devised
A - Artist - The city is a thriving place for art in any form . A lot of respect also.
B - Babu's right hand - in promoter driven companies that this city's houses. This one person has unlimited power and money.
C - Coaching Factory. But of course, its a bit like Bollywood. The concept of survivorship bias will be very clear here. Winners take it all
D- Doctor - Even if you run an ethical practice, you can still make a lot of money
E - Entrepreneurship - Burrabazar, Metiabruz, Manglahaat, Park Street showrooms ( of course hyper competitive and you need to have some moat); IT Startups, Outsourcing startups
F- Fund-raising - either for the promoter as an employee or as a DSA (Direct Selling Agent). There is infinite appetite for money that you can raise from the bank.
G- Government owned Entities - The salary is same there as in any other metro city - and the Pay Commission will ensure you keep smiling forever. ( You only need to manage the politics of transfer)
H - Hotels & Restaurants - Of course - Corona crisis did take some wind out of its sails , but will remain evergreen - especially with the annual Bengal Means Business rituals, marriage reception demand etc
I - IT - Sector V is a thriving place. The occasional on-site means you can make additional dollars by getting per Diem and living a frugal lifestyle ( taking dal, atta, chawal from India )
J - Jewelers - Either as showroom or in Sonapatti - wholesale market
K - Knowledge Professionals - say Big 4, mid -sized advisory firms - work pressure may be high , Kolkata could be just a base location, but you grow well
L - Lawyers - This is a thriving profession here. Of course, you can always crib by comparing volumes with Delhi. But once your practice is set- either in civil or criminal , your life is set.
M - Marketing Offices of companies . There is one CA here also who draws a super salary as Regional Finance Controller.
N- ex. NRB ( Non Resident of Bengal). You will invariably fail to grow organically in job market of Kolkata. But spend a few years outside and come back straight as the super boss
O - Off-shore. Rentals are low . Attrition is low . This industry will thrive like crazy here.
P- Panditji - Religion is a super business here. Rudrabhishek, marriage, prescription of specific stones as per your horoscope - this practice will remain evergreen
Q - Quarantine Business - Sanitizers, Masks, et all ( your rates must be competitive though )
R - Real Estate - Only if you can manage the club politics . Sector is in doldrums now. But was the best way to park the black coloured notes and hence high demand
S - Sweets Shop - Cash sales, customers queue up for your products -sandesh, jalebi, singhara, club kachori,
T - Transportation - Evergreen business in the Posta and Krishna Cinema Belt. You have the entire North East, Nepal belt to service. Plus the lucrative Presumptive Taxation rates u/s 44AE. Dealing with the drivers is a nightmare though
U - Uber . If you can manage the drivers, you can invest in say 10-15 cars. However, with reduced incentives,
V - Vendor - if a corporate's Purchase Guys love you, you can supply any item and make millions
W-Warehousing. If you are rich, have ancestral property- you can convert it to a warehouse, lease it out to an Amazon or a Marico and just enjoy
X - Xerox shop - the ubiquotous one, although you cant match Sealdah rates
Y - YouTuber - Bong Guy 2.7 million subscribers , iT Creators - 4.68 million subscribers - Yours truly with 53k subscribers . More of timepass at initial stages unless you make it really big.
Z - Zoologist - Yes, its a hot career- becoming a Professor in this subject.

4 年You have painted a really rosy picture. Unfortunately the situation is not so in Kolkata. Especially I have first hand experience of sector 5 and big 4 in Kolkata in very recent past. Situation is grim. From 2012-13 things in Kolkata have started deteriorating.
