[One book to build faith, one to remove toxicity from your body, and one to create joy in your life]
I went through depression in 2016.
I lost all my faith in God, became totally hopeless, and in fact an angry atheist. That’s the thing about dark times… they polarise your faith. You either develop a stronger faith or lose all of it.
Over time, my views changed, and my values became clearer. Elizabeth Gilbert’s one TED Talk gave me my transformational moment, and I became curious about spirituality.
I went on to read authentic books from Buddhist monks, among other contemporary spiritual literature.
After reading so many books about Philosophy, Buddhism, Hinduism, and spirituality in general, I can confidently say if you want to learn spirituality, these 3 books by 1 author are enough.
Book 1: To Help You Build Faith
It’s normal to lose faith when you see so much suffering in the world and your life. Before walking down the road of spirituality, the first prerequisite is to practice building faith.
Faith is like a muscle, like your biceps. If you don’t exercise it regularly, you’ll lose your gains.
The first book I recommend if you are looking to explore spirituality, “The Universe Has Your Back”.
The best point I loved from this book was to create a faith statement. I have talked about using your mission statement as a prayer before, but this faith statement was a new concept for me.
Here’s how my faith statement looks like
“I’m always co-creating my reality & the Universe is backing me up in this. I am love, and whoever experiences me also experiences love. I’m a carrier of this divine light, that is love and truth. I speak my truth and share it with the world to help others see the light too.”
This is my faith statement. Yours will be different. The author mentions her own faith statement in the book. This faith statement is supposed to be your cheat guide to returning back to love and faith in tough times.
Book 2: To Help You Remove Toxicity From Your Body
There are essentially two emotions: love and fear; everything else is a derivative of either of them.
Fear is a survival-based emotion, it wants to protect us by alarming us of possible threats. The issue is, a lot of these ought to be false alarms. These alarms come up in the form of judgment, anger, anxiety, etc.
Unless we intentionally remove them, these emotions bottle up in our bodies. And that’s where this second book recommendation comes in handy.
“Judgment Detox” is one the best books I have read so far. Before reading this book, I didn’t know how judgmental I was.
We judge others in order to —
- feel good about ourselves.
- protect our own insecurities.
- distract ourselves from our own suffering.
In this book, the author mentions different ways to recognize our judgment patterns and methods to release those judgments from our bodies. In short, this is the handbook to detoxify our body from judgment and fear.
Book 3: To Create Joy in Your Life
Joy is our birthright. Miracles are common.
These may sound a little weird or even unacceptable to most, but that’s what the author preaches. She has popularly stated — “If miracles aren’t happening for you, you’re doing something wrong.”
This third book in the list of recommendations will help the reader create joy in their life.
“Super Attractor” is the book that helped me accept — “It’s okay to feel good. Happiness is my birthright. And I’m ready to welcome love in my life.”
The transformational shift I received
Fear gives us a false sense of safety, and we start believing that life is supposed to be hard and full of suffering.
This book helped me with the shift — “The miracles are natural. And it doesn’t a long time to transform your life.”

For Me, Spirituality Is the Reconnection With Love
We get attached to fears because it seems familiar. And our journey to freedom lies in connecting back to love.
How would you reconnect with love?
- Acceptance for self.
- Compassion for others.
- Faith in the Universe.
- Forgiveness for the past.
- Mindfulness for the present.
- Hope+Surrender for the future.
This is what spirituality means to me. What about you?

3 年I am glad you overcame depression. The only catch I find in this post is that you imply spirituality and atheism cannot co-exist?

3 年You make it sound like this 'I lost all my faith in God, became totally hopeless, and in fact an angry atheist.' is a bad thing. Why ?

3 年I also went through clinical depression for three years in the early nineties. I lost all faith in God. It took years of work to regain my relationship with God. I still don't have faith. But I do want to sense the divine. I have spent decades on studying J Krishnamurthy's teachings and the Enneagram. It has helped me profoundly. I am happy that you are in your path to progress. Whatever works for you, go for it. Hope you live a good life from now on.
