If you want to know what ‘good’ looks like in self-organising teams, watch a school, not a management video.

This month – I was wonderfully reminded that it’s not the theoretical kind of teamwork you read about in a management book about agile, high, functioning teams that helps you become one.
It is the act of immersing yourself & your team in the practical-on-ground, actual life application of teamwork in action that can offer the most significant growth.
Attending a community-focused event where self-organised teamwork was modelled with excellence has changed me in more ways than one! It had all the ingredients. A powerful vision, a well-crafted experience, an extraordinary venue, strong logistics, a raft of unlikely volunteers and some surprise appearances from celebrities & VIPs for good measure.
What made it so memorable and magical for the 800+ people who got to experience it over 2 days was the fact that it was designed and implemented not by an events company but by a school ( Qatar Academy Doha ) and led by a self-organising team that included an inspirational assistant principal, @elizebeth Kennedy with the support of her leadership team, students & fellow teachers, parents, volunteers and a number of schools focused communication team members.
Watching the event and all the moving parts was deeply inspiring as briefings and de-briefings unfolded & plans were formed, tasks were implemented, and any last-minute changes were acted on with ease through a masterful amount of self-organisation. From managing risks to seating plans, dance routines, MC scripts, transportation and logistics around moving 400 + children from a stadium back to school. Everyone felt a shared sense of purpose and had just enough information to roll up their sleeves and make it one of the most memorable school trips that will be shared for many years to come. The level of detail to ensure the safety of so many students with different needs would make even the most seasoned production manager do a double-take – so next time I need some inspiration on what good looks like… I know where to look.
Transform your vision into reality by aligning your team's understanding, which will dramatically accelerate your growth and finally free you to lead.
