TRAINING IS GOOD BUT COACHING IS WHAT HELPED ME GET WHAT I WANTED!

** 1 – I Focused with Clarity

I was at that juncture in life where I had many directions to take professionally, but was unsure of all of them. Despite being loaded with so much experience, a history of tremendous exposure and achievement, the way ahead seemed unexciting and hence very tough. I then decided to explore the idea of being coached but this was only after exploring and then completely dropping the idea of being mentored by seniors. My coaching started with envisioning what I really wanted to do and my reaction was “OMG!” I nearly kicked myself for not doing this earlier. I started to get immense clarity and couple with that amazing guts to move ahead with what I wanted to do! I started to feel my way through to take child like steps ahead but started to struggle. Slowly I had started to wonder if I was really made for it. Did I take the wrong decision? Why was I struggling…?? Yes, I broke down too somewhere midway! Then I realized this: Sometimes we are just too involved, too close and cannot see the wood for the trees. This was the case for me and the fact that my coach barely had experience in the area in which I worked turned out to be a real bonus. It required me to explain everything to him clearly and simply which then helped increase my own understanding.

It seemed painfully slow at first, but the more questions he asked, the more, I realized I was working hard but was not focused. I lacked focus because I had just dived in and didn't fully understand what needed to be done and when, but now with better understanding and analysis of my situation, I started to focus on what was important. It turned out that my coach had a much better understanding than I thought, but played dumb to help increase my clarity, focus and ultimately my effectiveness. I learnt by leaps and bounds after making mistakes while dabbling in different projects. Wow! My conviction in coaching had grown 10 fold! By this time I was happy that I was being coached and not being mentored! The results were remarkable.

****** 2 – I Became More Accountable

One big issue with me was that despite the fact that I knew what I had to do, I kept making excuses to myself and repeatedly got out of the pressure of doing tough things. I convinced myself that if I let something slip to next week, it would be OK. Little did I know, that I was making blunders on blunders this way! My coach was god sent because he acted like an accountability associate pushed me to keep my commitments. You know how that happened? Whenever I thought about making those excuses to my coach I could hear and sense that how lame and weak I sounded. That was a jolt for me and I realized how repeatedly and easily I was doing it! Like I said, my coach was god sent!

******3 – My Confidence Started To Grow

I always though I was a tremendously positive and a happy-go-lucky person, but over a period I realized that I was indulging in self-depreciating negative self-talk which was one the biggest inhibitors to my success. It was easy to see all of the problems, the pitfalls, and reasons why failure await me, so much so that it can actually stopped me from even trying. Yes! I stopped trying and I externalized my problems. It was always my situation, or my colleagues or my company! Good coaches will help you visualize and dream success, help you put in place a clear cut game plan that will help build confidence, and demolish doubts and that is exactly what my coach did for me. Self-confidence is critical to success, but it is tremendously difficult to build our own self-confidence.

*******4 – I Evaluated and Implemented Better Ideas

It is difficult to judge if a plan or strategy pathetic or outstanding, weak or strong, crazy or sound however discussing them through and through can help us to evaluate them 360 degrees. I have lost count of the times I have dropped an amazing thought just because either I talked myself our of it or decided that a not-so-good-an-idea would be a better option. My coach helped me to prod and challenge each thought before implementing it. Additionally, every idea and thought came from within me so I did nit blame anyone, in fact I had more conviction in each and worked super hard to get them to succeed. Of course, I still made mistakes but I quickly learnt what I should have from them.

****** 5 – My Decision Making Had More Conviction

We all sometimes are glued to our biases, preconceived notions, or beliefs about people or situations that can actually mess up our decision making and hence plans as they cloud our judgments. My coach brought in an unbiased view, and helped me segregate chaff from grain. My coach was blunt, upfront and honest and that, even though unpleasant at first, worked wonders for me! Initially, I started to feel a bit low, but then when I realized that he had only my success in mind, I quickly gave in and worked at everything he said with tremendous seriousness and focus.

Since my first coaching session, I have made coaching a part of my annual development plan. I now realize that you can read all the books you want, attend training courses, seminars, and conferences but the real progress comes when you have a coach, as they can help you improve focus, hold you accountable, build your confidence, help you shape your ideas and give you a different perspective which we all need from time to time.
