At the Functional Movement Group we've always been a fan of tweaking the position of an exercise to create a different stimulus to the musculoskeletal system and and to promote the development of movement freedom and skill in uncommon variations as defined by our principles of developing movement Capacity, Competency, Variability/Variety and Confidence.
Using the M.A.T (Movement Assessment Tool) we can then standardise the exact position of the hands in the sagittal, frontal and transverse planes for an exercise such as the push up. This sets an accurate baseline that allows consistency in our assessment and training plans.
