Are you using ChatGPT ethically for essay writing? The shocking truth you need to know!

I asked ChatGPT a few questions about ethical and unethical use by students, it asked if I wanted it to generate something more comprehensive to read and prepared this article, it even came up with the clickbait headline…

ChatGPT is an advanced AI language model that can be a useful tool for students in various academic contexts. While it has many potential benefits, students must use ChatGPT ethically and responsibly to avoid academic misconduct. This post explores some ethical and unethical ways that students might use ChatGPT for essay writing.

Ethical ways to use ChatGPT

One ethical way that students might use ChatGPT for essay writing is to use it as a research tool. ChatGPT can be used to generate ideas and provide relevant information on a particular topic. For instance, students can input a specific topic or question, and ChatGPT can provide relevant material and sources that can be used to support their essay. In this context, students are using ChatGPT as a research assistant to help them gain a better understanding of the topic.

Another ethical use of ChatGPT is to improve writing skills. ChatGPT can be used as a writing tool to check for grammatical errors, syntax, and other common writing mistakes. For instance, students can input a draft essay, and ChatGPT can provide feedback on the overall quality of the essay, highlighting areas where the student needs to improve. In this context, students are using ChatGPT as a writing assistant to improve their writing skills and academic performance.

Unethical ways to use ChatGPT

One unethical way that students might use ChatGPT for essay writing is to generate an entire essay. Students can input a prompt or a topic, and ChatGPT can generate an entire essay on the topic. This practice is unethical as it amounts to plagiarism and cheating. Submitting a ChatGPT-generated essay as one's original work can lead to serious consequences such as failing the assignment or being expelled from school.

Another unethical use of ChatGPT is to copy and paste responses without proper attribution. ChatGPT can provide answers to questions on a wide range of topics. Students can copy and paste these answers without properly citing their source, which is unethical and amounts to plagiarism. This practice can result in serious consequences such as a failing grade or academic sanctions.

How to use ChatGPT ethically

To use ChatGPT ethically, students should consider the following:

  1. Use ChatGPT as a research tool: Students can use ChatGPT to gain a better understanding of a particular topic or question. However, they should ensure that they cite the sources properly and use the information provided by ChatGPT as a reference only.
  2. Use ChatGPT as a writing tool: Students can use ChatGPT to check for grammatical errors, syntax, and other common writing mistakes. However, they should ensure that they use the feedback provided by ChatGPT to improve their writing skills and not to copy and paste the suggested changes.
  3. Avoid using ChatGPT to generate entire essays: Students should not use ChatGPT to generate entire essays, as this is unethical and amounts to plagiarism. Instead, they should use ChatGPT as a tool to assist them in the writing process and not as a substitute for their own ideas and critical thinking.
  4. Properly cite sources: Students should ensure that they properly cite their sources when using information provided by ChatGPT. They should avoid copying and pasting material from ChatGPT without properly citing their sources.
  5. Use ChatGPT responsibly: Students should use ChatGPT responsibly and in accordance with their academic institution's policies and guidelines. They should avoid using ChatGPT to cheat on assignments or exams, as this can result in serious consequences.

Conclusion

ChatGPT and similar models can be a useful tool for students in various academic contexts. However, students must use ChatGPT ethically by acknowledging the potential benefits and risks involved. Using ChatGPT ethically can help students improve their research and writing skills, while using it unethically can result in serious academic misconduct. Therefore, it is crucial for students to use ChatGPT responsibly and in accordance with their academic institution's policies and guidelines. By doing so, students can reap the benefits of this innovative technology without compromising their academic integrity.

I prompted it with some questions on a certain topic. Whereas it provided almost correct information, it fabricated references using parts of relevant journal articles. This being the case, if a student uses it to write an essay on a topic, there is a high likelihood that the fabricated citations will be caught.
