There are the right job criteria, and the wrong job criteria.
Use the wrong job criteria and you'll get screened out for jobs when you're qualified ...
Would it surprise you that you're using the wrong job criteria for almost every job you apply to?
You probably don't realize you're using the wrong job criteria, but you've been taught to do this by other career resources, outplacement firms and career coaches.
Here's why you're using the wrong job criteria, and how it affects your unemployment job search:
Job descriptions don't include the real search criteria: For companies with an HR department (or person), job descriptions are used as a legal document, giving a generic description of many jobs to protect the employer against lawsuits and to keep compliant with government hiring rules. It's written by HR and legal in the prior year, not by the hiring manager. The job description covers many similar jobs in different departments, locations, products, business units, subsidiaries, because it's intended to protect the company, not to help you get interviews/jobs.
Because the hiring manager realizes the job description doesn't reflect their current needs, they communicate with recruiters to search based on a checklist of current criteria that meets their individual needs. That checklist contains the real search criteria, usually very different than what's published in the job description.
This is why using the job description to modify your resume, gives you no advantage over other job seekers, but causes you to describe yourself as the wrong fit ... because you're looking at the wrong criteria.
So what can you do about it?
If someone taught you how, you could do more than your competitors, gaining a huge job search advantage by using the real search criteria, the criteria on the hiring manager's checklist, the criteria that's hidden from the published job description.
You'd already be doing this and you'd be kicking unemployment's butt ... but no one has shown you how, so it's your butt getting kicked.
So, you could keep on getting a foot in the rear, or you could learn how to find the real search criteria, to make your unemployment job search faster.
