Are you underselling yourself?

I've been trying to raise my own awareness for a few weeks now. I've realised that the signs of underselling yourself can vary from situation to situation as well as person to person. From observing others and reflecting on how I show up has been really revealing.

Some common things I have seen happen and heard from other business women when I've shared what I've been doing include:

  • not speaking up in meetings especially with peers at networking,
  • not actively seeking out new opportunities,
  • not taking ownership of my/our successes.

It's been really helpful to pay attention to my self-talk and the language I use to describe what I do and my accomplishments.

So, if you find yourself using words like "just," "only," and "simply," this may be a sign that you're underselling yourself.

4 ways you maybe underselling yourself without even realising:

  1. Not speaking up about your accomplishments - telling yourself that your work will speak for itself.
  2. Not sharing your ideas or offering solutions - staying firmly in the background.
  3. Not being confident in yourself or your abilities - making yourself small around others who are more confident or outspoken
  4. Not taking risks - sticking to the status quo and not daring to try new things.

Challenge:

Identify one way that you could be underselling yourself and think of how you can change your behaviour, language or self talk to stop underselling yourself.

Keep it simple, just think of one thing to change.
