Are You Unconsciously Repelling Money?

"I keep working harder, putting in longer hours, but all I'm doing is spinning my wheels. I don’t seem to get any traction. I’m pretty much at the same level as last year,” one of my clients confessed, sounding exhausted and frustrated about her stagnant revenue. It felt as if there was an invisible hand keeping her income right where it was.
And she isn’t alone. I hear this all the time from women who are hustling hard, trying to make financial headway.
This client was dealing with what many of us have been told: The harder you work, the more you earn.
But as she kept adding hours and intensity, her income remained the same.
The problem wasn’t lack of effort—it was something much deeper.
Many people unknowingly hold complex emotions and limiting beliefs around money, creating an internal tug-of-war that hinders their ability to achieve financial success.
They desire wealth but simultaneously fear what it represents, pushing it away just as they try to attract it. Instead of treating money as an empowering ally—a “money honey”—they make it into a “money monster” fraught with dread, control, or guilt.
At the core, the real issue isn’t the amount of money earned or saved but rather unaddressed money blocks—unconscious mental attachments and negative feelings toward wealth.
Let’s see if any of this sounds familiar.
1. The Big Myth: Hard Work Equals Wealth
Have you ever felt that you’re putting in endless hours but not really getting anywhere? Many of us grew up believing that to be successful, we have to grind and struggle. But if hard work were the only answer, wouldn’t we all be millionaires by now?
What if financial success was about aligning your beliefs with the life you want and shifting from feeling like money is outside of your reach to believing it’s an ally that wants to support you?
Don’t get me wrong – work is valuable, but hard work can reinforce the idea that money is hard to get, creating an endless loop where you hustle but never move forward.
2. What Does Money Represent to You?
Let’s be real—money isn’t just a tool to buy things (although that new pair of stilettos looks darn good, doesn’t it?). For many of us, it represents something bigger: freedom, stability, or even safety.
But here's the problem...
When we rely on money to fulfill all these needs, we assign it immense power over our lives
This attachment creates a dependency, where we feel our sense of freedom or security is externally controlled by money.
Ask yourself: Are you unknowingly giving money control over your dreams because it feels easier to play small?
Why would you give something external so much influence over your life?
3. Are You Using Money as a Scapegoat?
Be honest with yourself here: do you ever use money as a convenient excuse not to do something you dream of? “I can’t afford to start that business,” or “I’d love to travel, but it’s just too expensive.”
These thoughts may seem innocent, but they’re often ways to stay comfortable.
Money becomes a convenient “culprit” for staying stuck and not exploring the growth we claim to seek.
Think about it. If money represents freedom, where are you not allowing yourself to feel that freedom already? Are you holding back from living fully, and then pointing to money as the reason? This pattern keeps us waiting for “one day,” while life passes by.
4. Fear of Being Seen
The desire for more money can also bring up hidden fears. Let’s face it—having more can mean standing out, and for some, this triggers fear of judgment, rejection, or even failure.
More visibility often means more eyes on us, and that can feel uncomfortable.
Many entrepreneurs unconsciously hold themselves back financially just to stay safe from that level of exposure.
If you’re honest with yourself, is this fear of standing out something that’s been simmering under the surface? I like to call this “tribal consciousness.”
Back in the old days, survival meant being part of the community; it was literally dangerous to risk being cast out or criticized.
So, could it be that as your visibility grows with wealth, this ancient "cave times; don't get thrown out into the wild" instinct kicks in—the urge to keep your head down, avoid being "found out," and dodge judgment?
Here’s a revelation: the cave times are over. Yep, I've heard through the grapevine.
Besides, does staying small really feel safer? Or is it just keeping you from stepping into your true income potential?
5. Unrealistic Expectations and Emotional Attachments
Money is often burdened with unrealistic expectations to fulfill our needs.
“I’ll be happy when I double my income.”
“I’ll go on a vacation when my business doubles in size.”
If I had a nickel for every time I heard something like that… Actually, make it a $100 bill, will ya?
We expect money to bring love, safety, happiness, approval and a plethora of other demands which it cannot meet, creating a push-and-pull dynamic.
The result? Money becomes elusive, coming in and out of our lives without stability.
Remember money, in the end, is just a tool. By letting go of your expectations towards it, you can start treating money as it is—something that’s meant to support you, not define you.
6. Money: Monster or Honey?
Picture this: you invite friends over for dinner, but as the time approaches, you start worrying about whether they’ll like your cooking or judge your home. You panic, lock the doors, and turn off the lights, pretending you’re not there. They leave, and you’re relieved but also sad. Then you realize you really want them there, so you invite them back, but as soon as they come close, you panic and shut the door again.
How long do you think they’ll keep showing up? Let me break it to you - They ain’t coming back!
This is how many of us treat money:
We ask for money because we want prosperity, but then we worry or get scared and unconsciously push it away.
It’s like trying to steer a cart with two horses pulling in opposite directions—one toward wealth and the other toward fear. How far can you get when your heart and mind are working against each other?
Take a moment to reflect—are you treating money like a “money monster” or a “money honey”?
When it’s the monster, money is that nagging worry about your 401K, bills, or future security, robbing you of the chance to enjoy life right now. But when it’s a “money honey,” it becomes an ally, a supportive partner helping you make your impact in the world.
So, which one would you rather invite to dinner? Honey tastes sweeter. Just sayin’.
