Are you treating yourself right?

Thanksgiving. Holidays parties. New Year's. Let's not forget about all that Halloween candy. It's probably the least healthy time of the year, and the time we're most likely to get on our own cases about health, exercise, weight loss, resolutions, etc.
This is a complicated topic, and I'll try to stay off my soapbox (wait, would that count as jump squats?), but I want to pass on some wonderful advice from virtual personal trainer and fitness coach Rachel Nigro , who came on Sales for Nerds recently to discuss how we can treat our bodies better so we can feel better, look better, and perform better.
Beyond living in a society where the default, easy choices are unhealthy, conventional wisdom tends to make the problem worse.
We try to cram exercise into an already overfilled schedule.
We go on drastic, unsustainable, life-force-draining diets.

And then we wonder why it doesn't work.
Rachel flips the typical script on its head. While she specializes in personalized fitness plans, here's the general outline you can apply to your life:
Do these things for the long term, and for yourself, so you can live a full, active life.
(I have gone through the process of making the mistakes and coming around to Rachel's viewpoint over the past couple of decades. You don't have to take that long. Just check out her interview here.)

1 年Reuben Swartz - this is too real, "Stress is supposed to be a temporary response to an emergency, not a default state." Good article and discussion on your podcast with Rachel Nigro.?

1 年Wow! I love this list of priorities. You can only do so much at once. It feels overwhelming to think about it all. It is super useful to see it written out in an order that can be managed. Thanks Reuben and Rachel!

1 年Reuben Swartz I've noticed just by getting more sleep I feel 100% better. It all starts with sleep, and then next for me is drinking enough water during the day. Today I was at a funeral so didn't do the best job of drinking enough water. I'll do some hydration now. What are some practical ways to deal with stress on a daily basis?

1 年Love this from Rachel and from you Reuben Swartz! The biggest thing for me was finding a way to make exercise my Stress Reducer vs. Something I Don't Do Because I'm Stressed. My two favorite ways to blow off steam are 1) hip hop dance classes at the community center across the street- Thank You Aurora, Colorado! and 2) Cardio Fantasies - a term from Mindy Kahling - where I get on the eliptical trainer and listen to inspiring music and act out my fantasies (in my mine, obviously) of being a superspy, a Beyonce-level superstar, a pro surfer, skier, musician, etc. It's so nice to experience these fantasy sides of me that it does not feel at all like "working out."

1 年First off Reuben Swartz LOVE the video! And the focus on more sleep and less stress. Especially eliminate chronic stress. Even when other things are in balance, forgetting those two alone can wreck havoc.
