Are You In A Toxic Workplace?

Are You In A Toxic Workplace?

Have you ever wondered whether you’re “working hard” for the good of the team—or simply burning out in a toxic environment? The difference is subtle but life-changing.

Let’s start with what truly counts as teamwork in tough times–something we’ve all been asked to take part in, even if it’s not always fun. Here are a few teamwork highlights from my storied career:

  • When I worked for a large hotel as the Employment Manager, “all hands on deck” meant plating food in the kitchen for a major conference. There I was in a suit and heels, in the hot, sweaty kitchen, doing my part!
  • At Old Navy, Corporate employees work in the stores alongside the retail employees every year on Black Friday. I thrived during my shifts in the dressing room—loved every second!
  • As a Regional HR Consultant for McDonald’s, I worked the fry station at our first restaurant inside the Magic Kingdom for 8 hours straight during the opening rush. People gotta eat!

None of these moments were in my job description, but they showed the power of a strong, supportive team working toward a shared goal. And I loved every minute of it because the team environment made those “extras” feel worthwhile.

?But how can you tell if a company fosters this kind of healthy teamwork—or if it's veering into toxic territory? I’ve got you.

3 Signs of a Healthy Work Environment

  1. Shared Purpose: Everyone rallies together for the good of the mission. You feel like your efforts matter.
  2. Mutual Respect: Leadership and coworkers value your time, contributions, and boundaries.
  3. Temporary Extra Effort: High-pressure moments are balanced with recovery time and appreciation.

?And on the flip side?

??3 Signs of a Toxic Work Environment

  1. Unrelenting Pressure: Extra effort becomes the norm, with no end in sight.
  2. Lack of Recognition: Your hard work goes unnoticed or unappreciated.
  3. Poor Boundaries: You’re expected to sacrifice personal time for unclear or endless goals.

Do Your Homework:

Before you accept a new role, research the company’s culture. Work for a company whose mission you believe in—where you won’t mind the occasional extra effort.

If you’re on the job hunt now and want to make sure you avoid “toxic territory” in your next role, ask these 5 interview questions:

  1. What does teamwork look like during high-pressure times?
  2. How does leadership recognize and reward extra effort?
  3. What’s the company’s approach to work-life balance?
  4. Can you share an example of when employees went above and beyond? How was that received?
  5. What do you do to prevent burnout in your teams?

Finding the right team can make all the difference and prevent you from being on the job search again after just a few months

?So tell me, what kind of environment helps you thrive? Is it flat hierarchies? Offsites in exciting places? Or just a well-oiled machine where work happens efficiently?

?What kind of environment helps you thrive?
