In last week's Fast Track Friday, my live weekly Facebook session, which provides powerful self-development skills, I was thrilled to share a new word that resonated with me – tidsoptimist!

The word refers to people who are habitually late because they believe they have more time than they think. Could this be you? I certainly fall into this category, but I must point out that being able to label a condition is no excuse to continue the behaviour. It is, however, an opportunity to recognise it, so that you can correct it.
When you push the boundaries, you run the risk of compromising yourself and opportunities. Also, the behaviour can be perceived as unreliable and/or unprofessional.
If you have the natural propensity to believe you can be more than is achievable, it is time to stop, reflect on why this is happening and consciously change the pattern.
Five techniques to help you adjust your tidsoptimist behaviour
- Start saying 'no', so you can say 'yes' to what is important.
- Manage your diary to allow adequate time between meetings, especially when travelling.
- Preview and review your day, so you can pinpoint when you are most likely to cut things too fine.
- Add an appointment with yourself so that you can plan your week.
- Recognise how you feel when you are up against the clock compared with how you feel when you work to realistic timescales.
Small steps to improve this trait will help you work more effectively. Taking time to pause, is key to making the right decisions and everyone will appreciate the difference.
