Are you Team ChatGPT or Team Google Bard? The Battle for AI Chat Supremacy

Are you Team ChatGPT or Team Google Bard? The Battle for AI Chat Supremacy

Listen on substack

Chat GPT was released in late 2022 whilst Google Bard was released this year. They are both very advanced chatbots. Lets compare the two and see which might be better for you!

I asked Google Bard to tell me what ChatGPT and Google Bard were and here is what it said:

  • ChatGPT is a large language model chatbot developed by OpenAI. It is trained on a massive dataset of text and code, and can generate text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer your questions in an informative way.
  • Bard is a large language model chatbot developed by Google AI. It is trained on a dataset of text and code that includes Google's search results and other data. Bard is designed to be a more specific LLM for generating text and code for different tasks.

Legend has it that google rushed to release barred its own version of a highly advanced chatbot to compete with ChatGPT. In trying out both, I have found that there are a few differences and similarities. Google BARD does come across as less developed than ChatGPT. However, Bard does have some interesting differentiators that are worth exploring. I'll compare the two below systems below:

Release Date

  • ChatGPT was released to the public in February 2022
  • Google Bard was released to the public in March 2023

Output length and iterations

  • ChatGPT: The output lengths from Chat GPT tend to be longer than for Bard.
  • Bard: The output tends to be shorter but Bard also provides a total of 3 draft responses to each question asked. Sometimes, the outputs seem to be quite similar but worded differently. Other times, the outputs may vary.

Historical data

  • ChatGPT: Historical requests can be accessed on the left side of the screen when using ChatGPT. Sometimes, the history is unavailable when there is a high level of usage of ChatGPT.
  • Bard: You have to go to a separate google page to see information about previous Bard requests. At the time of writing, you can’t continue where you left off and you can’t actually view the questions you asked and the responses you received in that session.

Limits of the system

  • ChatGPT is based on internet data collected up to September 2021.
  • Bard has data up to the 28th of February 2022.

Start screen

  • ChatGPT: Features suggestions and shows history on the left hand side
  • Bard: Features 3 suggestions of things you could ask it.

Sign up and access

  • ChatGPT: Immediate access. Available in all but a few countries. Excluded countries do not have access for security reasons. Source: demandsage.com
  • Bard: You have to sign up to the waiting list but you only have to wait a few hours. Available only in the UK and US for now. (Excluding people who try it using VPNs?? )

Other natural languages

  • ChatGPT: When I asked "Peux-tu m'expliquer ChatGPT? (In English this means “can you explain ChatGPT to me?)” I got a response back in French starting with “ChatGPT est un modèle de langage basé sur GPT-3.5, créé par OpenAI. C'est une intelligence artificielle capable de comprendre et de générer du langage naturel…”
  • Bard: When I asked "Peux-tu m'expliquer ChatGPT?" I got the response: "I am an LLM trained to respond in a subset of languages at this time, so I can't assist you with that. Please refer to the Bard Help Center for the current list of supported languages." This was not very helpful ??.

Time to provide output

  • ChatGPT: ChatGPT was slower at responding Bard but responses were longer. Chat GPT displays a blinking cursor as it thinks about how to respond to your question. Then it provides the answer to your question in a typing manner, where the answer is revealed one letter or word at a time. Sometimes the result comes out fast, sometimes it comes out slowly. This I think is also impacted by the number of people using ChatGPT at the time the request is made.
  • Bard: Bard was faster at providing responses but responses were shorter. Bard shows a rotating colourful star with a smaller star that appears next to it intermittently whilst it thinks about its response. Then provides the response all at once.

Running in multiple windows

  • ChatGPT: You can only run ChatGPT with one request at a time. If you try to run multiple requests at the same time in different windows you will get an error message.
  • Bard: You can open multiple Google Bard tabs and run queries concurrently.

I have been enjoying testing out both tools and seeing what I can do with them. One thing is for sure, they are helping me be more productive by getting information to me quickly and helping me to?start with abundance?on many tasks on my to-do list. I’m personally still Team ChatGPT for now but I will use both as I like the fact that google gives faster responses and also multiple draft responses. I feel ChatGPT understands my requests better and provides me with responses I am often happy with the first time around.

Have you tried out ChatGPT or Google Bard or any other AI tools yet? Share your experience in the comments section. Another AI tool I am looking to try out is Runway.ml which can create videos based on text requests. That’s mind-blowing! ??. I’ll let you know what I find when I do.

Curious much?

If you’re curious, here are ways I used both ChatGPT and Google Bard in writing this article:

  • Coming up with title suggestions
  • Coming up with relevant hashtags and removing duplicates
  • Providing me with definitions

By the way, if you’re interested in other articles I have written that feature these advanced large language models, check out the articles below.

Useful prompts to try out to compare both tools:

  • Give me a list of 20 unicorn companies and their estimated valuation and put the output in a structured table
  • Give me ideas for a LinkedIn Article that would appeal to a wide audience.
  • Teach me about financial literacy.
  • Write a video script for a TikTok video talking about balanced diets.
  • Write a sermon about the Love of God with verses
