The majority of babies born in rich countries can expect to live to a 100-Year-Life. Meanwhile, across many countries, the retirement age has been pushed higher in recent years. Yet, amidst these changes, we continue to structure our lives and look at life-phases the way our parents or even grandparents did. While young adults and adolescents are often labeled as immature, irresponsible, and undependable, older individuals in many cultures are seen as frail, less capable, and weakened with age.
Sociologists use the term ageism referring to stereotyping, prejudice, and discriminatory actions or attitudes based on chronological age. These age biases and stereotypes are pervasive in various aspects of society.
Ageism at the workplace
At the workplace ageism can harm employee morale and productivity, while also fostering unfriendly work cultures that hinder collaboration. Given that aging is an inevitable aspect of life, the battle against ageism holds relevance for every individual.
To reduce age-based bias at work, consider these steps:
- Reflect on personal biases about different life stages.
- Recall instances where age impacted a situation and your feelings.
- Challenge your own stereotypes and explore their origins.
- Review the quick guide of the World Health Organization communication strategies to avoid age discrimination.
- Evaluate your professional network's age diversity and broaden it.
- Engage in cross-generational interactions, like mentoring, to learn from different ages and experiences.
BTW: Happy Birthday to Robert De Niro, who is celebrating his 80th birthday on August 17th. On the occasion of this event, media coverage emphasized the fact that he became a father last year at the age of 79. Any reactions? Then check above: 1. 1 å¹´This is an insightful post, especially in the context of the changing demographics and longevity. Your suggestions for reducing age-based bias at work are concrete and actionable. I particularly resonate with the idea of engaging in cross-generational interactions and mentoring - it's a great way to foster mutual understanding, respect, and learning. We all have unique experiences and perspectives to share, regardless of our age. Let's strive for more inclusive workplaces where every individual is valued for their contributions, not stereotyped due to their age.

1 å¹´Absolutely agree, Enrico A. Palumbo, thank you for bringing this important issue to light. The corporate world indeed has a role to play in creating a more inclusive culture that respects all age groups. Ageism and age discrimination impact everyone, regardless of where they are on the age spectrum. Let's seize this opportunity to recognize and applaud our shared humanity and commonalities, rather than our differences.
