Are you a Systems Hacker???

If you haven't read "What is a Hacker?" by Brian Harvey from University of California, Berkeley then take the time to do so - link below.
In it he describes the origins of the term "hackers" To him "A ``computer hacker,'' then, is someone who lives and breathes computers, who knows all about computers, who can get a computer to do anything. Equally important, though, is the hacker's attitude. Computer programming must be a hobby, something done for fun, not out of a sense of duty or for the money. (It's okay to make money, but that can't be the reason for hacking.)"
And " A system hacker knows about designing and maintaining operating systems"
I specialise in the recruitment of Linux engineers and more and more I'm seeing an increase in demands for "hackers". No longer being a run of the mill Systems Administrator is enough. The Tech companies I recruit for want people who are passionate about what they do and they have fun doing it.
One of these tech companies best describes it as follows: "You'll work in both the dev and systems worlds, instrumenting key parts of core architecture and supporting devs as they try to do the same. We're looking for a true hacker - you'll work as much in bash as Python, and you'll drop into some C now and then. You'll implement monitoring and alerting systems to support site stability and performance. You'll pro-actively scale our infrastructure to meet ever-increasing demand."
If you are a Linux admin and you are not playing around with Perl, Python, Ruby etc in your spare time. If you think Puppet and Chef are a kids toy and someone who cooks a great steak and you are not lazy enough to look at ways to automate everything, because lets be honest who want's a repetitive job, then you will be left behind.
At Stelfox we've seen massive growth and change in the Linux market over the last 2 years in Dublin and our forecast is that 2015 will be even bigger again. Don't get left behind.
BTW if you are a Systems Hacker and want to see what's happening in the market at the moment drop me a line and I'll be happy to talk.
