Are you sure you it is time to write that letter?

Are you sure you it is time to write that letter?

Let’s write a letter!

I have heard this multiple times in meetings, not just through my work, but also in other gatherings where an issue is being discussed.

What is the appeal of writing letters? Several aspects:

  • Drawing a line in the sand,
  • Making their position clear,
  • Feeling action oriented,

…..and probably a few more things, some valid, some not so much.

Experienced Government Affairs professionals are very particular about when they write a letter.

Why is that?

Because when you do not have direct decision power and you want to achieve something via influencing, you need to think carefully about when you want to make strong position statement.

Before writing a letter you need to consider a few things to determine the value of sending it, they include:

  • What actions do you want the receiver to take?
  • How will it be received? I.e. why do you think the letter will prompt these actions?
  • How will it impact future compromises on the issue at hand?
  • What, if any, leverage do you have in the given situation?

Basically, don’t send a letter unless you have a good idea of the outcome.

Taking a strong stand can feel right in the moment, but the long-term impact needs careful thought.
