Are You Sure About That Career In Tech?

The tech industry has been steadily rising.?

Investors, techprenuers, start ups for unimaginable experiences etc have propped up just to make life a little easier.

What a time to be alive!

The interests of people both young & old have found loopholes (better still lets call them? opportunities) to branch into tech and ways to integrate their current jobs into the tech “craze”.

It’s been a pretty interesting journey and a big boost to the industry. But the question is: Are you sure you are ready for a job in tech?

There are parts of this journey just like any other that no one tells you about.

They don't tell you about the frustrations of your code breaking, how the numbers are not adding, how your website isn’t resizing itself for mobile navigation, how your updates don’t look right and how the code you’re trying to push shows nothing but RED.???

The agony!??

?As a person who works in some aspect of Tech, I am no stranger to the frustrations but I did not envision it would be this way in the beginning.?

I remember a time when we had to rewrite an entire app because an update to our servers caused us to lose the database.?

Imagine going through something that frustrated you for days again. Something that literally brings you to tears and your knees.?

(As Queen Charlotte would say “sorrows, sorrows, prayers”)

Maybe the money makes it worth it? Some say it does. But ask yourself these questions:

  • Are you comfortable with ambiguity? The tech industry is constantly changing, so you need to be able to adapt to new technologies and trends. You also need to be comfortable working on projects that are not fully defined, and being able to come up with creative solutions to problems.
  • Are you a good problem solver? Tech professionals need to be able to identify and solve problems quickly and efficiently. They also need to be able to think outside the box and come up with innovative solutions.
  • Are you a team player? Most tech jobs require you to work with others, so it's important to be able to collaborate effectively. You also need to be able to communicate your ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Are you willing to learn? The tech industry is constantly evolving, so you need to be willing to learn new things on a regular basis. You also need to be open to feedback and be willing to change your approach if something isn't working.

The tech industry is a great place to be, and there are opportunities for people of all skill levels. If you're interested in a career in tech, I encourage you to take the plunge. Just be prepared for the challenges and be willing to learn.

But what about the frustrations?

Sure, there will be times when you want to pull your hair out. There will be times when you want to give up. But those are the times when you need to dig deep and find your inner strength. Those are the times when you need to remember why you started in the first place.

Because the tech industry is more than just a job. It's a passion. It's a calling. So if you're ready to take on the challenges and make a difference in the world, then I say go for it!

The tech industry is waiting for you.

This was a good read! I always say, there is glamor in working in tech and there’s also lots of money to be made BUT we work super hard for that money and “glamor”. Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying ??

Brilliantly captured Maame and thanks a lot. You have nailed it. It's difficult and stressful. I recall starting to study HTML, CSS, and Javascript via CodeAcademy. It was difficult, and I gave up after constructing my first website with the assistance of friends. I understood that programming is not for everyone, and it becomes even more difficult at certain ages. However, I found that there are other wonderful tech occupations such as TechSales, Project Manager, Product Development, and User Researching that are less technical and pay well. If you can code, do so; if not, sell. Furthermore, you can co-found a tech company without being technically savvy, which is really beneficial. Thank you, Maame.
