Are you a Supercommunicator?

Are you a Supercommunicator?

It’s fascinating that we manage to get anything done given how poorly we communicate!

By poor communication, we mean that the intention of the person communicating is often completely missed by the receiver of the message.

Here’s a fascinating insight from a favorite communication book, Conversational Intelligence by Judith E. Glaser:

“Researchers have concluded two things. One is that we drop out of conversations every twelve to eighteen seconds to process what people are saying; two, we often remember what we think about what another person is saying because that is a stronger internal process and chemical signal. In other words, our internal listening and dialogue trumps the other person’s speech.”

Effective communication is a superpower. In fact, it’s so important that it is at the top of the list for the LinkedIn 2024 Most In-Demand Skills.

We are reading Supercommunicators by Charles Duhigg and are captivated by what we are learning. He explains that whenever we speak, we’re participating in one of three conversations:

  1. Practical, decision-making conversations focus on what’s this really about? This conversation determines what to discuss or our mutual goals for the conversation. It also shapes how the conversation will unfold or the rules of engagement.
  2. Emotional conversations ask how do we feel? This is the heart level of communication. Listening is essential to understand at the level below the words.
  3. Social conversations explore who are we? Research shows that 70% of our conversations are social!

We move in and out of all three types of conversations. However, effective communication comes from alignment and connection, so if you don’t know what?kind?of conversation you’re having, you’re unlikely to be communicating.?

There are many useful ideas, insights and practices that you will benefit from learning. So, get a copy of the book, read it, apply what you learn and improve your communication!
