It’s fascinating that we manage to get anything done given how poorly we communicate!
By poor communication, we mean that the intention of the person communicating is often completely missed by the receiver of the message.
Here’s a fascinating insight from a favorite communication book, Conversational Intelligence by Judith E. Glaser:
“Researchers have concluded two things. One is that we drop out of conversations every twelve to eighteen seconds to process what people are saying; two, we often remember what we think about what another person is saying because that is a stronger internal process and chemical signal. In other words, our internal listening and dialogue trumps the other person’s speech.”
Effective communication is a superpower. In fact, it’s so important that it is at the top of the list for the LinkedIn 2024 Most In-Demand Skills.
