Are you still muddling your way through Microsoft?

OK, so I am a little bit biased in my love of Microsoft products, but there is a good reason for that. You see, I am in the fortunate position of understanding how to get the best results from them. When people share their angst and frustration at the clunky, slow or illogical workings of their PC, there is nothing I enjoy more than showing them the simple workaround. Basically, people don’t know what they don’t know, and I love the looks on their faces when they discover the answers.

Simplicity comes from taming complexity.

There are two major problems with IT today, and one is the major cause of the other. Firstly, people have got used to the idea that computers can pretty much do anything that we want them to do. We live in a technology run world where the expectation of instant results is as commonplace as clouds in the sky. This acceptance and insistence of getting a rapid response and answers on-tap means that we tend to overlook the reason IT works so well.

The technology we rely on today is simple to use, but infinitely more complicated to design and put together than many of us would imagine, or certainly more so than most people ever stop to consider. So the key to making the complexity really simple is understanding the correct way of performing basic tasks and the built-in shortcuts that 95% of people are unaware even exist. Every time a step in a process is over-complicated it increases the length of the whole process exponentially. And there are even times when some of the steps can be removed altogether.

“I’m too busy to do any training…”

I agree that there is a lot of time wasted in businesses today through people going to meetings to discuss and arrange more meetings. Likewise, some of the training that is booked seems like it has been organised to clear a budget or satisfy someone’s whim about a particular subject or other. So I would never advocate training, for training’s sake. But the idea that you can be too busy to learn how to save time is, quite frankly, ridiculous!

Think about it for a moment. What better use of time could there be than learning how to get more of it back? The fact is that you don’t know what you don’t know and companies like Microsoft are aware of this. That is why they certify training companies to help businesses get the most out of their products. Believe me, they have not become one of the biggest and most successful companies in the world by encouraging people to muddle through.

You know that feeling when you discover a shortcut on a journey that you have been travelling for years? On the one hand, you are excited because you have found a quicker route, and on the other you feel a little duped. Well, imagine what ten, twenty, maybe sixty minutes a day of less stress and fiddling around would mean sat in front of your computer each day! I promise you, this feeling will be all good.

Then imagine training all of your staff to enjoy the benefits of simplicity too…
