This month since love is in the air, I’m exploring the love affair (or otherwise) with your work.

Valentine’s Day signals the season of love…but what about your love for your work?

Do you still feel excitement when you start your day, or has the spark faded? Do you dread people asking about your work or maybe you have the Sunday scaries even before you start each new week??

It’s not uncommon to fall out of love with your job, especially if you fell into a career or were persuaded to do down a route by others. If you’ve been in the same role for a long time you might be bored stiff, or is it a life change or significant change at work that’s shifted your priorities

Work is such a big part of our life that if we are unhappy, it spills out into all other areas of our lives.

The pandemic years left many of us questioning what we truly value in our work and life, prompting big changes for some (myself included). I pivoted from a 30-year career in HR to become a career coach, helping others discover what lights them up and find work they love.

The romantic idea of “finding your passion” isn’t just for relationships, it applies to our careers too. So just how do you either rekindle the spark or find work you love?

If you’re feeling stuck in a job that no longer excites you or worse is making you absolutely miserable, here’s a few things you can do:

1. Reflect on Your Relationship with Work

Think about the early days of your career—did you feel inspired and energised? What aspects of your job did you love the most? Compare those memories to how you feel now. Are you fulfilled, or have things changed? Sometimes our interests and values evolve, and what once felt like a perfect fit might no longer suit us.

2. Assess Your Core Values and Strengths

It’s easy to overlook what truly matters to us when we’re caught up in the day to day grind. What gives you a sense of satisfaction or purpose? What are you naturally good at? When your work aligns with your core values and strengths, it’s like being in a fulfilling relationship and everything clicks into place. If there’s a mismatch, it can lead to frustration, discontent, and even burnout.

You can use free online tools to identify your values and strengths. These insights can help guide your job search, highlighting what kind of roles and work environments are best suited to you.

3. Don’t Settle for a Job That’s ‘Just OK’

It’s common to feel trapped in a job because it pays the bills or offers a certain status. But life is too short to stay in a role that leaves you feeling drained and uninspired. Career changes are possible at any age. It’s never too late. I made a major career shift in my late 50s, and I’ve seen others do the same well into their 60s and 70s.

Take some time to think about your dream job. If you could write a love letter to your ideal role, what would you say? What would it look like, and how would it make you feel? Sometimes we need to give ourselves permission to dream a little.

4. Identify What’s Holding You Back

What’s stopping you from going after a career you love? Is it fear, a lack of confidence, or concerns about your skills? Once you identify the barriers, you can start working through them. Seek out resources or speak to a coach, friend, or mentor who can help you break these down and build a plan of action.

5. Take Practical Steps to Move Forward

If you’ve decided it’s time to make a change, don’t let fear overwhelm you. Start with small, practical steps:

?? Refresh your CV, showcasing your relevant skills, experience and achievements.

?? Optimise your LinkedIn profile and connect with people in industries or companies you’re interested in.

?? Reach out to your network and arrange informal chats or informational interviews to learn more about your desired field.

?? Consider further qualifications or courses in your chosen areas of interest.

Career change can be daunting, but it’s also a chance to find work that fills you with joy and purpose. When you finally find a role that aligns with your values and strengths, the transformation is incredible. ??

Gone are the days of dragging yourself out of bed, feeling overwhelmed, or teetering on the edge of burnout. Instead, you’ll experience a renewed sense of value and belonging, with the kind of work-life balance that allows you to be present for the people and activities you care about most.

It’s not just about landing a new job; it’s about reclaiming your energy, building better relationships, and feeling genuinely better in your life.

After all, if we can spend our days doing something we love, isn’t that the greatest gift we can give ourselves?

Take care,

Lorraine ??
