Are you starting a new chapter in life?
Maria Newman
Helping the retired, the redundant and the divorced to regain their confidence, reconnect with who they are and silence their inner critic so they can navigate life with certainty
Life is made up of a series of chapters. Some transition smoothly into one another whilst others just seem to be a chaotic whirlwind that seemingly comes from nowhere.
Whether it happens seamlessly or with a crash, it will still impact your life.
You may be questioning who you are.
You may have had your confidence knocked.
You may have turned up the voice of your inner critic.
My question is, what action will you take now?
Do you allow life to become what it will be and hand over responsibility to someone else?
Or, do you take control of the situation to ensure this new chapter is all you want it to be?
My new chapter started about 7 years ago when I decided to take voluntary redundancy from Rolls-Royce having worked there for 17 years. I’d had a great career with lots of amazing opportunities. But returning to Rolls-Royce, after baby number 2, just didn’t feel like the right decision. It was time to start a new chapter.
I left not really knowing what was going to happen next and without a plan. However, the one thing I was sure of was I was going to make this the best chapter of my life yet.
If you’re at that point, then here are five steps that you can follow to allow that to happen.
Give yourself time
Give yourself some time and space to consider where you’re at and where you want to be. There is no need to hurry, although this is not an excuse to procrastinate either. If it helps, give yourself a timeframe by which you will have made some decisions on what this part of your life looks like.

Understand your options
To get to where you want to be, determine the options that are available to you. It’s time to do some research. Gather as much information as you can and take the opportunity to speak to people who may be where you want to be.
You must make a decision with your eyes open and not with the blinkers on.
Right for you
Only you know which path is right for you. Others may want to advise you, which is kind, but they are coming at it from their perspective. No one has travelled the same path as you and therefore you know what’s best for you. You know the answer deep down. Remember, what’s right for you may not be the easiest path but it will lead you to where you want to go.
Take action
Thinking and reflecting is great but at some point you need to act. What is your first step? It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture it just needs to get you started in the direction you want to travel.
Ask for help
And don’t forget, you can ask for guidance. Someone who will ask you questions that will help you to help yourself. The right person can help you to find the answers that you are looking for.
Starting a new chapter in your life doesn’t have to be scary. Yes, it may be unknown however it’s all about perspective and the way you choose to look at it. Instead of seeing it as fearful, see it as an adventure filled with lots of exciting experiences.
