Are You a Starter But Not A Finisher? Time to follow through and show up. Here’s how.

Are You a Starter But Not A Finisher? Time to follow through and show up. Here’s how.

You know how it is??If you want to set up a self-loathing doom loop all you have to do is set your bar very high and then experience the slow slide down the wall of fail. The Failing Wall (see what I did there?)

But seriously, we all do it.?Some clients even say “throw me in at the deep end” as if drowning, floundering and spluttering your way to the surface was a sure-fire motivational hack. Doing things the tough way and through tortuous pain is so Medieval it would make the Plantagenets wince.

The trouble with being a fully paid-up member of the Starter Not Finisher Club is that you now have an internal autoresponder designed to reduce your sense of self. It says “I don’t follow through/I’m a quitter/I haven’t got what it takes/I am not good enough”.?

It’s the deserted exercise bike cum clothes hanger in the bedroom, the ghosted guitar that never did get you a passport to groupies and the buckets of chicken wings rider or the investment Sweaty Melon gym gear now worn for Love Island sofa loafing.?

The obvious reason we quit is because it’s tough, tedious and it hurts.?The other reason is fear of success. Weird one, but what if we good really good at it, got to our target weight, started our business, finished the course, became pretty hot looking or could hold our own in a Led Zep tribute band? Scary, right?

It’s then that we sabotage what might be and get back to the safety of the known.

The good news though is that I have a very BIG secret to share with you that will scupper your inner saboteur and enable you to stay the course and not throw in towel - but fold it neatly into an origami swan as you fist thump the sky.

The secret of starting AND finishing??Well -?it’s showing up.?

Sorry if it’s a bit “meh”.?Yes, showing up takes zero talent but it’s almost all of what it takes to be successful.?Giving up, like the snooze button, isn’t an option.

Here are some other things to consider:

  • Have big goals and dreams but set bar as reachable landmarks on the way.
  • Be patient.?There are no over night successes. It will be tough, tedious and tiring but that’s when you did deeper.
  • Don’t complain how hard it is. All great things take effort.?Resistance just adds to the pain.
  • Stay in the now.?When you run a race you are looking at the next step in front of you. Keep taking the next step while focusing on the finishing line.
  • Don’t over stretch yourself. If you burn out you will drop out. Pace yourself.
  • ?Progress beats perfection and procrastination.?Do something regularly to inch you forward on your journey.
  • Stop saying “I’m a starter not a finisher” – we become what we believe.
  • Say instead – “I’m a beginner and a winner” or?something?like that. It’s ok to plod to the finish line. You got there and that’s the victory.
