If you speak 5 languages and have a period you’ll never get a job in the UK!

We are constantly sold a myth that ENGLISH is the dominant language in life, travel and business.

So it does depend where you want to be in life, where you want to travel and what type of business you want to do!

But if you are a female living in the UK that speaks an additional language or more then read on to find out why you can command the best salaries, have the best opportunities and boss your job interviews!

At a noisy “first time parents” dinner party, I’m tuning into a Spanish mother of 1 who is super confident and able to articulate great family stories. The way she weaves her vocabulary, moves her body and her eyes ignite to truly ensure I am living the story with her. I’m left wanting to watch the second series Haha!

Her communication style is wordy, some may call erratic jumping from subject to subject — not focused. She then blurted out I can never get past the interview stage. I’m told I talk too much, I don’t understand the English culture so won’t get my dream job!

We spoke at length about various options, tools and mostly how many of our past experiences shape the story we tell ourselves. She left the room and her partner said it must be so tough for the employers in the UK to understand my wife, she speaks 5 languages so can’t get a job in the UK!

I spat out my rooibos tea and said pardon?

Yes, it must be challenging for those based in the UK culture of working to understand my wife…

No, I said…not that bit, the part where you said she spoke?5 languages…

All of the women I coach speak one or more languages and it’s often a lack of confidence that deters them from applying for their most shiny job! Progressing in their careers, getting that salary increase or just simply leaving their current toxic environment.

All are professionals in their career and have been working with companies and projects aligned to their soul’s purpose…

1. Create your own opportunities

Being fluent in one or more languages can give you an edge over monolingual candidates in job interviews. Understanding that a company may have HQ in a few international places is a great way of asking and researching how the various offices communicate and work together. Thus, placing yourself in a strong position across departments within your skill set and cultural understanding.

These opportunities exist in all companies and departments across many industries!

According to the U.S. Department of Labor estimates, there will be a 42% rise in demand for interpreters and translators over the next decade.

2. Gives You an extra Edge in Interviews

Your ability to speak a foreign language will help you land a job and get preference over other monolingual candidates. Knowing a second language boosts your chances of landing jobs amongst a group of other candidates with similar abilities!

A British Chambers of Commerce study discovered that more than 60% of companies are limited by language barriers in foreign trade.

If you have a foreign language you can command a higher salary. A recruitment agency recently cited in the economist stated that knowing. a foreign language can add between 10–15% to your salary.

Being able to speak a foreign language screams add value to any company, but imagine working for a smaller company who needs multilingual people to help them explore business opportunities in foreign countries. You do this successfully, you are now running a department!

5. Emotional Intelligence advantage

Having the ability to speak a second or third language transcends spoken dialogue and allows you to relate to many cultural groups in a personal manner. Emotional Intelligence is a skill often accumulated through cultural lived experiences. Speaking to anyone in their own language breaks down barriers and allows them to feel more comfortable and confident.

This type of relationship is necessary for any business setting. Knowing your client’s native language will elevate their professional and business relationship which can lead to better business results.
