Impacting performance

Impacting performance

Many go through the years thinking that they are the best at motivating and leadership in all areas of their lives. They take pride in announcing that theirs is the best and sometimes only way to success. I have often wondered how greatness is achieved? How does one light that fire in another person, that drives them to success. What does it take to be that source of light, of inspiration to your teams, your family and your friends?

While pondering these thoughts, I came upon a survey that Forbes did. They found that 65% of employees would forgo a pay raise, if this meant that their bosses would be fired! Imagine that! How can things get so bad in an institution to harbor such negative feelings? There is also Gallup's engagement survey. This survey states that 82% of employees see their leaders as uninspiring. Where, and when do we as leaders lose that connection? It’s not just in the workplace, but within homes, universities and basically all areas of our lives.

Do you know what it takes to be that leader that can motivate a team, a company, a family, a country? I would venture to say that it all depends on the geographic location, the cultural needs and current situation one is experiencing. How well do you know those persons that you have attracted into your sphere? What is their reality? Their dreams and aspirations? Are their refrigerators empty, their bank accounts tittering close to zero until they receive the next pay check? Are they stuck in a job or situation where they feel that no one cares, or even sees their potential? In time these nameless persons can even begin to feel that the best thing to do is to make a quick exit. It takes an effective mentor to see the signs, to venture beyond and find the talent within.

As the leader of the organization do you personally take stock of the persons on your rosters? There is something I learned many years ago from a great mentor, and that is that "People are Emotionally Predictable” We all want to be important to someone, we want to be trusted and appreciated for our strengths, and even mentored on our weaknesses.

Are you a source of that awe-inspiring spirit that make teams take it to the finish line, despite what is apparent to the human eyes? There is so much more that lies beyond our comprehension as to the strength of spirit. This is not easy to determine from a resume, or a first contact with a person. It takes that great leader that can see what is not yet apparent in another human being. In the 18 years I have enjoyed in the Staffing and human resource part of the business, I learned that we hold a great responsibility to that person that looks to us for guidance. That present skills don’t determine the strength and determination to succeed. I have learned that I am entrusted with something even greater than a job, I am entrusted with helping someone tap into that spirit within that will help open the doors of success!

Setting the tone of success is all about determining strengths and weaknesses in a team. Training, developing and looking at how emotional intelligence can be directed to foster growth in many situations where communication is lacking. What is your leader really saying?  Words can undermine or create a vision for others to feel they are being respected, and included in the mission  and vision of that team.
