Are You Snapping Your Weeds at the Top?

Are You Snapping Your Weeds at the Top?

Yesterday I decided to weed the box hedges we planted earlier this year. It was an impromptu decision – I was actually doing something else when I noticed that some weeks had sprung up and were beginning to take hold.

With #renovation in full force, there are so many things to do around our house at the moment. But now that I’d noticed the weeds I knew it would drive me nuts if I didn’t do something about them. I grabbed my gardening gloves thinking that it would only take a couple of minutes to rescue my new box hedges from possible death-by-weed.

I was on a mission and threw myself in with gusto, pulling at each weed quickly. Of course, they were just breaking off at the stalk and I knew if I continued this way they would just reappear very soon. To remove the entire weed FOR GOOD, I had to dig down (for some quite deeply) until I reached the root and could uproot it in its entirety.

Some weeds came out quickly and easily. Others took some effort (pesky buggers didn’t want to budge) and I needed some help in the way of a hand-rake (there’s probably a real name for it, but that’s mine!).

Yes, it took a little more time. Yes, it took a little OR a lot of effort. And yes, sometimes I couldn’t do it with my own two hands.

It reminded me of the times I, and my clients, spend diving deeply to remove the “weeds” that are killing our natural, beautiful growth.

Too many times, we ‘snap our weeds at the top’. We are happy and content for a short amount of time in the knowledge our ‘weeds’ are not visible to others. But without digging deeply and removing the root, they are destined to return. Again and again.

Some weeds come out easily. Some take a little more digging. Some, are deeply embedded and we benefit from the help of others.

But once the work is done, from the root, they are gone for good. And that, my friend, makes way for the most gorgeous garden to grow and thrive.
