If You Are a Small Tech Firm That Wants to Scale Big…

Since you’re in tech, you already know that technology is growing at a pace faster than anyone can really comprehend.

New technology is becoming “dated” in a few months, sometimes even a few weeks.

The good news is that the world is full of tech-related opportunity. New tech millionaires and billionaires are being created every day.

The bad news is that there is so much similar tech out there that buyers are overwhelmed and confused. Most tech solutions get lost in the noise.

If you work at a small tech or tech-related firm, you know what I’m talking about.

It seems almost impossible to make headway, let alone become the next Apple, Facebook or GoPro.

Does any of this sound familiar?

·        You are unable to coherently or concisely articulate the Distinct Value (differentiation) of your solution

This leads to…

·        You are unable to identify a true and viable target market that really wants your solution

This leads to…

·        You waste time and money marketing to the same people, in the same way, that your competitors do

This leads to…

·        You are commoditized in your market (i.e. You are a “Me too” company)

This leads to…

·        You consistently struggle to generate leads, sales and revenue

This leads to…

·        You can’t scale the business easily or quickly

This leads to…

·        You know the rest of the story

Obviously, you and your colleagues have tried everything you can think of to break this cycle. But without any new options you end up “grinding it out” day after day.

The bright shiny dream of tech potential can quickly become a dark and unrewarding odyssey.

So how can your company get off this merry-go-round of stagnation?

Well, there are obviously a number of pieces that have to change, but the start is finding – and owning - your “true value.”

Until YOU know your TRUE value the market never will

This is why blindly adhering to the principle of “feedback” from the market can be destructive.

“Dear consumer, I have no idea why my tech is special, different or why you’d even want it. So I’m going to just ‘put it out there’ and let YOU tell ME what it is and why you want it!”

Good luck with that!

The truth is that “value” starts with you. You have to decide “why me” before anyone else will understand “why you.”

So how can you determine your true value?

You probably can’t.

Huh????!!!!!

You see, since you are in the middle of “your stuff” you can’t see your solution from an objective outsider’s perspective.

You need a new, unbiased perspective to help you determine your true value.

So, step one is to find an Outsider that can bridge the value gap between you and the market.

Look for someone who…

·        Has at least some business savvy

·        Can quickly understand you and your market at a very basic level

·        But with little or no experience in your specific niche

Now I Know most people will say “Shouldn’t I bring in someone with 20 years experience in my specific niche?”

No you shouldn’t.

Someone with too much experience in your niche or industry will have the same tunnel vision problem you do. They will have great intentions and horrible results.

Now, once you have this “Outsider,” find out:

·        What THEY think your tech is

·        What THEY think that YOU think your tech is

·        What THEY think the market would see it as

·        What THEY think the market would really want in a solution (to the problem you solve)

·        What THEY think would make your solution Value-able to the market (if it isn’t already)

From there you have to decide if you can make the changes to your tech that they recommend or, if it’s just a perception issue, if you can easily reposition your solution to the market.

Now that you have a better perspective on your value, the rest of your issues – wasting money on marketing, commoditization, struggling for sales, can’t scale, etc – should quickly go away.

And there you go. Just knock the first brick out of the wall and the rest will tumble…which will allow you to finally grow.

Good luck!
