You should start doing this on Youtube...

You should start doing this on Youtube...

Before I get into what "this" is, here is my social proof for credibility on the subject.

I have been a full time creator for the last few years. I have almost 400k subs across all of my channels and have amassed over 120M organic views. I have also worked with a number of very successful individuals on their YouTube strategies and am the CEO of Video Marketing World Conference here in Dallas. I started Youtube as a hobby and it has grown into this little empire.

Let me get real for a minute and dispel a few common misconceptions.

  1. Uploading content daily doesn't help you grow faster in most categories...especially out of the gate. A few years ago this was a different story, but YouTube is now rewarding higher quality content that keeps viewers watching for longer periods of time. We have tested this on multiple channels across multiple categories and have found that uploading more than a few videos a week can actually hold some of your uploads back from reaching their highest potential. For example, if you post one video in a week it may get 10k views where if you post 5 videos in a week, each may only get 2k views. You end up competing with yourself. This is not an exact stat, but it's a trend that we have studied that varies across categories and content topics. The magic number seems to be a maximum of 3-4 videos.
  2. Re-purposing content or batch producing more than a week or two worth of content is a bad idea. For one, because viewer trends and hot keywords are always changing and if you create 6 months of content or whatever, what is popular now will not be 6 months from now...and two, most people are not Gary Vee and don't produce incredible repurposed content. The content ends up feeling like spam and no one engages with it. I would rather see a few very intentional videos a week than 800 pieces of content that are sub par.
  3. The power of YouTube is in the community. If you want to build a true YouTube presence, you can't just post content, you have to engage your audience and get them to know, like and trust you. There are a variety of ways to build an engaged audience, but it mostly comes down to just being yourself. Pro engagement tip, never engage with a troll, let your audience do that. A good argument in the comments will help turn your followers in to fans.

This leads me to the tips that I want to leave you with today. Do this if you want to succeed on YT.

  1. Be very specific with your content when you first launch. Remember red water, blue water. Focus on the sub-niches and become an expert of one very specific thing. After a few weeks of producing content you will almost always see a spike in one of your videos, double down on this video and create more content around that keyword. Trust me, this is how we got one of our clients to outrank The Weather Channel. Don't be the jack of all trades. A lot of people will tell you to just be yourself and do whatever feels natural...they either don't know what they are talking about or they started at a time when that was an okay strategy to use. If you want to grow a successful channel, be hyper focused.
  2. Don't focus on quality or quantity focus on the value you are giving. I know a lot of folks have been saying this lately, but I am going to take it a step further. It is totally okay to skimp on video quality and editing if you are providing valuable content. In fact, if you want to know a filming and editing tip that will save time and money, here it is...film your content in OBS (free software), set all of your cameras and images up as graphic overlays assign hotkey commands to them and press record. OBS allow you to jump from screen to screen or camera to camera with the press of a button. If you do this right, you can create a video that looks highly edited in one take.
  3. Be a unicorn. Don't just copy what others are doing. Put your own twist on things. For example, a few years ago I owned an orthodontic lab. I decided to create some fancy retainers and put them on YT. No one was doing this at the time and I cornered the market. This resulted in millions of views and hundreds of requests for retainers...all because I was a unicorn with my content. The point is to get weird a good portion of the time and do things that no one else is doing.

Okay friends that is all I have for today. If you have any questions leave them in the comments. I'm here to help. BTW the unicorn horn above got 2.8 million views.

Great article Scott. Packed with value. I am a big OBS fan too. I use it for recording all my tutorial videos. My favorite feature in there is the noise gate. The microphone I am using right now does not have one built in. That noise gate has saved me on numerous occasions. I am not a fan of repairing audio. And audio is everything even in video.

Great clarifiers and tips Scott! ?? When do we get to see you with the unicorn retainer? Also, this thumbnail is great! Any place you suggest for making thumbnails besides Adobe photoshop? I’ve been using Canva, but I feel like I’m limited with text options and editing. Thanks!

Great post Scott Simson. On the repurposing of content on #LinkedIn, is it ok to do once in a blue moon or is it taboo on All channels?

This was super valuable Scott - thanks. I was literally just recently searching YT for opinions on niching-down on your channel. Like you said, most of them were just like “be yourself,” and I just couldn’t help but feel that that was bad advice. This brought a lot of clarity. I will also say that it hasn’t sat well with me when YouTubers who have been in the game for 8+ years give advice on how to grow today, but the fact you still work with newer channels and understand what things are like now gives me a lot more confidence in these tips. ????
