If you want to find a way to stand out from the crowd, try blogging ??
"Blogging is a great way to show your talents and interests to prospective employers, while adding an edge to your resume. If you blog consistently it shows your dedication, passions and creativity - all of which are key attributes employers look for in job candidates." Lauren Conrad
Blogging helped me especially in the beginning of my career (at that time in Risk Management). I started a blog called RiskArticles.com where I documented all of my learnings. It started when my manager, the Chief Risk Officer of a bank asked me to help assess a specific regulation for financial services companies. I had never seen it before and started to google quick summaries that can bring me up to speed. I didn't find anything that I felt provided the quick insights on the regulation so I decided to write it myself.
In the process of building out this blog, I learned a lot and also increased my own network; as there were several other people that were looking for quick summaries of regulations or risk management topics. The blog now receives most of its content from guest posters and continues to live on today. The cool thing that happened in 2011 was that a recruiter from Deloitte came across my blog post and contacted me about a potential role with the company as a Risk Management Consultant. I ended up taking the job and am still with Deloitte today. You never know where a blog can take you!
In the past few years, I shifted my focus from risk management to data science/ analytics, focused heavily on data visualization. Most of my blog posts live on LinkedIn; however, I do have a website StorybyData.com where I have some more content.
So, why should you start a blog?
- It helps you establish yourself as the authority on a topic
- Grow your network and build relationships
- Increase your comprehension of the topic at hand
- Improve your writing skills
- Open yourself up to other opportunities
- Stand out from the crowd
If you have a blog, please share a brief story about why you started it and/or how blogging has helped you.

7 个月I've had a blog going for a long time, and recently stopped adding content to it. I loved it as my creative space, but as life changed I felt it was time to move on. I love to visit and recollect my life as it was then. I originally started it to launch my book and experiment first hand with the social media advice I recommended to clients. Check it out one day: www.bowllicker.com - I think you'll love a few of the posts and possibly even this one: https://bowllicker.com/blog/langostino-lobster-tail-bucattini/

6 年I recently started a site to put any projects I've been working on in my spare time - a kind of online portfolio illustrating skills I'm working on building up over time. Having to write up details of how you've achieved something definitely forces you to think about how to communicate in a structured and accessible way. www.cddt.nz

6 年I started blogging last month. I was asked to speak to graduate stats students about my career at a WPI alumni/networking event (I received my MS in Applied Statistics in 2010)... once I wrote up that PowerPoint I was like "hey, this would be a decent blog post"... and I started blogging :) Www.kristenkehrer.com

6 年Great post! Funny! I started a new blog just this week! I find peace in writing and I give lots of advice to my mentees and accountability partners. Much of it has worked out, some of it has bombed, and all of it is good to share. I just started, but feel free to check it out. Http://Worklifeharmony.net
