You should NEVER RETIRE!

You should NEVER RETIRE!

You should NEVER RETIRE!

I can already see the comments coming... people complaining about the minimum age to get a pension increasing every couple of years, and how this is unfair. But how many people do you know that, after retirement, continuously slow down and live a bit of a dull life?

NO, that's NOT the standard process of ageing! And definitely not the only one!

First of all, the average living age is increasing roughly by 1 year every 4 years. Even beyond that, many studies show how younger generations can live above 100 or 120 years of age!

And live WELL ??♀? ????♀? ????♀? ????♀? ????♀? ????♀? ??♂? ????♂? ????♂? ????♂? ????♂? ????♂?

This depends of course on your genetics and, most importantly, on your habits... as you can see by some great studies from David A. Sinclair Ph.D., A.O. or, mentioning people I personally know, Barbara Rey Actis of Longevity Initiatives, or Augusto (Tuto) Marolla for BioHacking, or Lauranne Stas - Swiss Vitality Institute.

?? I hear someone being sceptical if we even live so long or a global virus or a world war will terminate us earlier... what is worse, to be wrong about the world ending early and then have no choice after having compromised your life/health/finances, or to live healthy and energetic until that point? ??

?? Back on track with the topic...

Just to be clear, we are not talking about retiring from your job and/or getting some income in the form of a pension.

It's about maintaining yourself LIVELY - this means physically, mentally and - yes - with some activity with a real goal, a real purpose, a real motivation, and the consequent sense of fulfilment.

?? ?? So, NO, by no means I am suggesting to be in your job until the end of your days!

The idea is to really keep your brain and your body active because THIS is what avoids you getting "OLD".

By the way, since the Future of Work is hybrid, you might find yourself having some side-business alongside your job... and maybe this is one thing you may want to keep on cultivating after "retiring".

Or start a new one, or a new passion, or mentoring someone younger, take part in some volunteering associations (actively I mean), there can be different examples for different people.

4??0?? This is one of the reasons why I am really happy to be in the 40+ League, because members there #NeverStopLearning, always look towards the future, always ready to challenge themselves for growth and reinvent themselves when necessary (incidentally, a few of the people I tagged in this post are in that group).

5??0?? Which reminds me of an upcoming roundtable organised by GBO, where Carlos Molina Grijalba will talk about 50pro, the project he founded for people who are 50 and above... and want to start their journey as Entrepreneurs (or have to, because at that age they are "too old to be employed").

YES, you can start a new career path and a new life even beyond your 50s.

After all, now that we understood the statistics for the latest lifespan, you lived only half of your life, right?

It's so intellectually stimulating to be surrounded by people who - just by being themselves - are able to inspire you to be the best version of yourself... and it's even more fulfilling when you know that it's reciprocal.

Tell me in the comments: do you have such an environment around you?

If you are an Executive or a Business Owner, have you ever thought about getting a Business Coach to be always on top of this fast-innovating society, where the Future of Work is now?

Great article, Giulio Zecca, PMP? I fully share your views. And my reasons for enjoying 40+ League are very similar to yours. While I am alive I will always have projects to pursue.

I agree a person must continue creating but do they need to work? No, they can participate in philanthropic endeavors. It is also ever so important that people have creative outlets! When people don't have a creative outlet, their work ends, and then their bodies cannot participate in the sports that they used to love, that's when things go awry.

I saw a very good suggestion recently. Basically retire every 6 years. Take one year off then come back to what you where doing. Think of it like the "break year" some students do while on college. I also believe every person has their own unique plan and needs to act accordingly. There is no standard rule, specially retirement. The one thing I am very angry about is the mandatory government retirement programs. Shouldn't I be the one to choose where I put my retirement money on?
