You should MAKE people quit.

You should MAKE people quit.

Relax...

Just hear me out.

By no means would I ever say that you should make people on your team quit. That's ridiculous. I'm not a monster.

But you should stop and ask yourself, "What am I doing, or what can I do, that will make people want to quit their jobs and come work WITH me?"

I have been through quite the transition in the last 6 weeks, or even 6 years. But especially the last 6 weeks. The short version of the story is:

  • A few years ago, my wife and I read "Delivering Happiness" by Zappos CEO, Tony Hsieh.
  • My wife left a career in insurance to work at a place with more of a focus on company culture. She chose Whole Foods.
  • For our 10 year anniversary, we visited the HQ in Las Vegas in 2015. Before we left, my wife told me her secret dream to work at Zappos and move to Las Vegas.
  • We made a video cover letter and showed to to everyone we knew, and everyone we met for 2 years. We even had Jon Acuff do a video testimonial on the video.

  • We sent it in, but they weren't hiring.
  • I changed my desktop wallpaper

  • We toured again in 2016. They still weren't hiring.
  • We kept telling people we would work at Zappos.
  • 2 years later, in May of 2017, my wife got the job and moved to Las Vegas, a few weeks after one of our vehicles got stolen.
  • After spending the summer at his grandma's, our son joined her in Vegas to start middle school.
  • We missed our anniversary this year, because we lived in two different cities. Our friend at Zappos, secretly decorated my wife's desk while she was at lunch.

  • I have been sleeping on the couch in our apartment for 4 months, finishing out a lease. We rented my bedroom out to people from Craigslist, and rented my son's room out to a friend, all to cut costs in Tulsa.
  • I just went through an extensive recruiting and training process to join an elite organization, so I can be ready for the move to Las Vegas.
  • I am counting down the days that I can be with my family again. The first week of November can't be here soon enough.

Why? Because Zappos made us quit. The people and energy at Zappos inspired us to leave the only life we have known together as a family, risk everything, and start over. We were willing to do what ever we can to be part of that team. The culture at Zappos has helped us realize that we can make a bigger dent in the universe from Las Vegas.

Make them quit.

Sincerely,

#zapponianbymarriage

This post is dedicated to our tour guide at Zappos, ak.a. RYO "The Man!" Thanks for being so nice to us, and cheering us along.
