You should be like Iceland , it is never about the Size
"It is never about the Size of the pen , it is how you write "
Those words still ringing in my ears since the first time I heard it, more than 22 years ago.
Yes, I heard it in totally different context, but, It really came to my mind gain now when I started to gather more information to publish my new latest Video about #Iceland :
I have gained more information and facts about Iceland that surprised me and then decided to share it with you and how we can learn from it as individuals.
but, to be more precise, This was not the first time that this country and it amazing achievements came cross my attention.
Iceland, it came as surprise for me for the first time at last summer in Euro 2016 , where their footfall team reach to the quarter final. no body was expecting it and many don't even know about this country, specially when we speak about Middle Eastern football audience.
At that time, I did a little bit of information research about Iceland, and I figure out about it is location and the fact that there are only less than 400 K people lives in that middle of no where island.
However, I have conducted more in depth research this time mainly for the @YouTube video and I came up with this amazing facts about this small but great country :
- The top 20 for Small Businesses.
- Top 10 countries in Human Development Index.
- On the top of the world for gender equity.
And, there are few more on the list; like, the mount of electricity been generated / person. As always, not only the quantity, the quality is on the top too with clean, abundant, and reliable power.
In addition, when to comes to the Human Resource Management , and they are excelling too on all of the following:
- Gender equity
- Striving for equal pay
- Higher level of income per person
- Poverty at : N.A..and much more.
Here , where I thought how we as individuals we can also learn from countries like Iceland, like what we did learn about #CostaRica in last last article:
As individuals, we should not only learn what Iceland has now; we should also reflect on how they recovered from 2008 crash ; and how they made it again to the top, how we should never give up, and come back again stronger.
Indeed, It is a success story that we should learn from it more and more:
- We should always diversity in our skills ( Not to do Iceland mistake before 2008)
and, I have covered the same concept in details in ( Arabic ) in my previous article
2. Regardless of where we are and how modest our resources are, we should start and aim to be the best.
It comes along with the quote of " Aims for the stars , if you fail, you will land on the moon".
3. Market Intelligence :
- what Iceland is focused on is what many smart countries done to achieve their competitive advantages, they focus on renewable energies. And, that what we individuals should do, we should acquire skills that will be needed in the near future and skills that are missing at workplace currently.
- Not only thinking about the goals and forgetting our people : they get into the tops in terms of income and business goals, at the same time, they are also on the top of the quality of life : jobs and earnings, and above the average in social connections, subjective well-being, health status, environmental quality, personal security, and education . And, here where we should also as individuals do the same, especially for those who are supervisors, managers and bushiness owners. People are very important, the same as the business gals.
Individually , and simply to conclude when it comes to human resource management , from the Iceland experience;
- We can do it regardless of the size of our team and the richness of our resources.
- We should also diversify our skills and competencies ( learn some about It or finance even you are a HR guru).
- Yes, we should put our business goals in front of our eyes 27/7, but, we should not forget about the team and their importance to drive those business goals.
- For Entrepreneurs : You may start small, but, if you focus more on the people aspect, you still can attract best talent in the market; this is Iceland, very small countries , but it is a dream for many immigrants around the world. Iceland is a dream for them to to come , work, and life in it.
And, it will be really strange to close up this article about mentioning how beautiful Iceland is , even, if we drift slightly from subject of HR.
