Are You Should-ing All Over Yourself?

So a week and a bit in to 2025, how are you getting on with those resolutions. Personally, I am not a big fan of resolutions, as I believe that you can make a decision to make changes that are going to benefit you at anytime of the year, not just in January.
But, I do know that for a lot people January is the time to make important changes, but here is an interesting statistic, 80% of people will have given up by the end of the month.
So why is that?
If we take a big topic such as losing weight, we get the instinct to make the changes, we go on a diet, sign up for a gym, but then you lose the momentum after a couple of weeks or so.
I was listening to an audio book by Tony Robbins, and he put it brilliantly in that people are should-ing all over themselves, i.e. "I should go on a diet", "I should do more exercise" etc. He points out that when you say to yourself that you should do something, that you will only do it if it is convenient to do so.
Instead, Tony Robbins suggests shifting your mindset from "should" to "must." When something becomes a "must," you create a sense of urgency and commitment that drives action, even when it's inconvenient.
The key is to connect your goals to something deeper—your values, your identity, or a compelling reason that makes the effort worthwhile. For example, instead of saying, "I should lose weight," reframe it as, "I must take control of my health because I want to have more energy to play with my kids and feel confident in my own skin." This shift transforms a fleeting resolution into a powerful, purpose-driven commitment.
That in itself to get extra motivation and momentum, but it again will fizzle out without the next piece of the puzzle to be fixed.
This is because we ask ourselves very simple questions when it comes to taking action, in that we ask questions, such as "how can I lose weight?" This in itself is never going to give you the answers that you really want. You have to go deeper and ask better questions of yourself. The next level of questioning would look something like "how I can lose weight, in a way that works for me?" This question will give you better answer, but you can still go deeper than that and ask even better questions.
The best questions dig into the core of what truly drives you and uncover the strategies that align with your unique circumstances. For example, instead of just asking, "How can I lose weight in a way that works for me?" try asking, "What habits and behaviours can I adopt that will make weight loss feel natural and sustainable for my lifestyle?" or "What specific changes can I make to my daily routine that will help me lose weight while still enjoying my life?"
Even better, take it a step further and ask, "How can I make this journey enjoyable so that I look forward to it?" or "What forms of movement and meals bring me joy and still align with my health goals?" These kinds of questions force you to consider your values, your preferences, and the practicalities of your life, leading to tailored solutions that are far more likely to stick. When you find ways to enjoy the process—whether it’s discovering a new love for yoga, experimenting with fun recipes, or walking with friends—it doesn’t just become a temporary effort but a fulfilling part of your everyday life. By asking better, more creative questions, you create a roadmap that's not just effective but also enjoyable, making it easier to maintain momentum in the long term.
Having the right mindset and asking better questions are vital steps, but even the best plans can falter without guidance and accountability. This is where having someone to guide your progress makes all the difference. A coach doesn’t just tell you what to do—they help you find what works for you, keep you focused, and ensure you stay on track, even when life throws its inevitable curveballs.
