Are you shocked at the apathy towards the risk?

Why is it when we work around so many dangerous, life-threatening environments, do we as humans take our safety and those around us, for granted?

I've personally shown this video to many safety critical environments during HF training courses, only for the participants to gasp and reply with comments like "pure stupidity"..."unbelievable", yet, when I've asked them if they've witnessed things similar to this, especially in aviation, they say "of course".

So, my next question was..."why are you so shocked at seeing that?"

The thing is, we get used to dangerous environments and our senses can become de-sensitised to the dangers around us. This can lead to complacency and simple human errors, especially in the airport/ramp environment. It doesn't cost us our lives most of the time, thankfully, but these errors certainly costs aviation time and money.

Ramp Resource Management (RRM) Human Factors training can help reduce these errors by focussing the individual and teams on why and how we lose these basic human skills in familiar environments; Threat and Error Management (TEM) Situational Awareness, Decision Making, Assertiveness, Communication, Leadership and Followership, Workload and Fatigue Management to name a few core modules.

If the UK CAA feel it's worthy of being part of their 'A Strategy for Human Factors in Civil Aviation'...why aren't you?

The recently published UK CAA Human Factors (HF) strategy states:

Vision – HF understanding is visibly demonstrated through appropriate attitudes and behaviours which result in a reduction of human error in the system.

If progress is to be made in continuing to develop and progress the CAA HF strategy the message must be that CRM (in whatever context dependent forms; TRM, RRM, etc.) should be established and that in future any ground service contracts issued should stipulate elements of HF/CRM training at appropriate levels. Our aim is to see everyone within aviation receive appropriate HF training according to their role.
