Maybe you feel some level of fear about making a change. I listened to an interesting?podcast ?the other day with David Rosmarin, Ph.D., director of the Mental Health Program at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School psychology professor.

His statement was that almost all clinical research shows that anxiety is universally linked to the inability to deal with?uncertainty. Getting a new job certainly comes with uncertainty, right behind getting married and having kids.

The problem is your ego doesn’t like uncertainty and likes to give you the illusion of control. Your ego fights you tooth and nail and distorts your reality. So I’m inviting you to see if you are held captive by your ego.

I was held captive by my ego after I was let go in October 2007 from Credit Suisse. I couldn’t get out of my own way. If you want to read more, check out “Lessons from My Credit Suisse Layoff ” video.

In this 5-part series, we will discuss how your ego might be sabotaging your job search in the following areas:

  • Your overall mindset
  • Your ability to gain career direction clarity
  • Your resume and LinkedIn profile
  • Your job search strategy
  • Interviewing

Is your overall mindset sabotaging your job search

If you answer yes to any of these questions, your ego may be preventing you from fulfilling your true professional potential.

  • Question 1: Have you convinced yourself we could be in a recession so there are no jobs out there
  • As I argue in last week’s video,?Don’t Believe the Layoffs Headlines , reading the headlines will give you a warped view of the job market. Sure Goldman, Google and a host of other Wall Street and Tech firms have announced layoffs, but most of announcements affect fewer than 5% of the workforce
  • These companies have staffed up 25% plus in the past 2 years alone
  • Plenty of smaller to mid-sized firms are still hiring, albeit not as aggressively
  • Question 2: Are you casually looking to see if the job finds you?
  • A casual approach is a passive approach which doesn’t really work well
  • Unless you are trying to find a similar job in the same industry, recruiters won’t give you much attention since they get paid for the easy placements
  • When was the last time you got something, you really wanted without putting a lot of effort into it
  • Question 3: Have you resolved yourself to this pay level and don’t think you deserve more?
  • As I argue in my video?Your Bonus Number is the Only Thing That Matters , money is a sign of respect, the only sign of respect an employer really gives you
  • If you don’t think you deserve more, maybe your kids or future grandkids will disagree
  • Since you are in your prime earning years, if not now, when?
