Is this you?
The silent thing that controls your life?
It is time to take control.
How are you?
How are you doing?
How many times do you get asked that?
And how many times do your reply Great, fantastic, good. And how many times do you lie?
We are taught in business to be “great thanks” How are you? And move on.
I tried this as an experiment once when someone questioned me and I told them a tragic set of circumstances of what was going wrong in my life at the time. As I did this I saw their eyes glazing over.
With the Covid-19 lockdown we are enclosed like never before and wanting to exercise to look after our physical health but what about our physiological health.
The outside world wants you to be great. But the reality is that is not always the case.
1 in 3 people has a physiological condition. Unlike age related medical conditions as we get older, we are more likely to suffer from heart conditions and cancers. Mental illness can and does effect a large number of people at any age. People say that these conditions are on the increase. It is that the social stigma is being lifted attached to these conditions and more people are seeking help.
There are some indications that certain practices such as learned behaviours or chemical interactions from medication can be a contributory behaviour. For example if a child is hit every time they make a minor mistake by a parent, this behaviour could cause anxiety, panic attacks and Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, based on the consequences of any perceived wrong action. There is evidence that some anti-malaria and anti-acne medication can cause depression and anxiety as well.
The more common conditions of anxiety, panic attacks, OCDs and physiological sabotaging can be addressed if people recognise them first.
How do you and often do you wash your hands? OK, it is an obscure question and in these current times with Covid 19 it is in some ways relevant. Before this some people compulsively washed their hands in a particular way. Washing in each direction a number of times, before rinsing. How often do you check your front door when you leave home? For most people it is once to lock and once to check. But those who suffer from the Habit of an Obsessive Compulsive disorder that number is more. Furthermore it is often and odd number 1. 3. 5. 7. 9. I met a guy who told me that he kept breaking the door lock mechanism because of his OCD. He would lock his front door and then try the handle, again and again until he go to 9 times then he was happy it was locked. He was sure it was locked after the second time but the compulsions to get to 9 was always too great. Unsurprisingly the door mechanism gave way and needed to be replaced on a regular basis. If this sounds familiar get some help before it takes over your life. One step at a time.
There are others who are corroded by failure, envy and hate, who are prone to alcoholism and depression. In some cases domestic violence. During the lockdown some crime has fallen but those who abuse their spouses have increased dramatically, Police and organisations who deal with are inundated by calls. If you are doing this, it is not an excuse that someone made you that way or it is their fault. You have a problem, take ownership and get help.
Fear of change and self-sabotaging:
Change is a part of life. Currently we are in lockdown and some problems have increased and challenges have been created whether you like it or not. Challenges are the changes and you need to get on with them, putting aside your fear because the fear is holding you back. Again help is out there.
We are in lockdown with people or on our own and in these times please reflect and check. Are your behaviours damaging your life and those around you? If so it is time to get help, it is time to change.
Have faith in yourself that you can have a better life, take up the challenge of change and move forward.
Good luck
