Are You On the Right Career Path?

Are You On the Right Career Path?

You reach a point in your career when you've done everything right - go to school, stay late at work, practice your skills, take on more work, and you start to ask yourself, is this right for me?

From the time we first begin to speak, we're asked, 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' The question repeats itself through the years, each time with more pressure to have a respectable answer. The question hits hardest at 18, when you're faced with graduating high school, choosing whether to enter the workforce and further your education. At this young age, we make decisions based on the self that we know. But what happens as years go on and you discover yourself on a deeper level, move out of the house, meet new people, and gain experiences that shape your perception of the world? We often forget that as we change, our careers must adapt with us.

This question urged us to consider what questions we must ask ourselves to analyze our career, and if our current path is a good fit for a happy and prosperous life ahead.

  1. What did I find interesting when I chose my career and what interests me now? Did my interests change? Did they grow into more niche interests? Are my current interests being satisfied in my career?
  2. What's my ideal work-life balance? Do I wish I had more time to spend with family? Do I do my best work at night and rather sleep during the day? Will my job allow me to enjoy life to the fullest?
  3. What kind of environment do I work best in? Am I happiest working alone at home, or do I need to be in a social atmosphere to work at my best?
  4. Do I feel purpose and satisfaction in my work? Every job has a purpose in our world, but does that job serve you on a personal basis?
  5. How important is money to me? Does your industry provide for your needs? Will you be able to achieve your dreams on your current career path?
  6. Will you be proud of the career you've had on the day you retire? How can I take pride in the work that I do?

Unfortunately, these questions require long hours of deep consideration and will not be answered overnight. But a career is a decades-long journey, and choosing the path to take is a continuous decision that requires you to be adaptable, persistent, and optimistic.

Lucky for you, our team of recruiters are experienced in social work, psychology, human resources, and business, and can help you build a meaningful career.
