We associate malnutrition with less privileged sections of society but malnutrition is prevalent across the society and has no relation to a person's economic condition.
It is hard to believe that societies which are over-consuming food can be malnourished.
Once we dig deeper, we will understand that there are two types of malnutrition:
1. Protein-energy malnutrition - resulting from deficiencies in any or all nutrients
2. Micronutrient deficiency - resulting from a deficiency of specific micronutrients.
Strangely, the second type of malnutrition is present in almost everyone with a high BMI. We can increase our weight and still be malnourished.
While eating, we are more concerned about quantity and taste. In most of the cases we may be getting enough calories, but not enough nutrients.
Most of the fast foods, processed foods and bakery items come in this category.
Our favorite packaged juices and aerated drinks give enough calories but lack in micronutrients.
A mug of morning tea or coffee may make us feel full and energetic but it hardly has any nutrients.
So next time you feel hungry, remember that your body may be asking for nutrients like vitamins, minerals, proteins and essential fats and not a diet rich in highly refined carbs.
Here are 6 symptoms which may indicate you are your body is not getting enough nutrition
1. Thinning hair
2.Paler complexion
3. Loss of muscle tone and strength
4.Frequent infections
5.Low energy level
6.slow wound healing
If you got any of these, there is good chance you body is lagging in required nutrition.
