Are you REMAINing?

It's the EU referendum on Thursday and, as ever, it's important to vote. Inspired by a well-crafted post elsewhere, I have to say I've not seen much clear cut, positive reasons for voting either way, just a lot of negativity. In my view, there are few facts - we don't actually know what will happen if we leave and we don't actually know what we might be able to negotiate if we stay.

On balance, and looking at the people I've mixed with over the years, particularly at work and in business networking and some of the voluntary ventures I've been part of, the eclectic mix of people has been nothing but positive, although I know the mix is more than just other Europeans.

Not least for the "joined up" nature of the World we live in, and many other reasons, not least the ease of travel and the prospects, leads me to believe that we need to REMAIN in the EU, with all its imperfections, and continue to make it evolve.

Use your vote

The EU is a comparative newcomer to the World stage and consequently has imperfections. Brexit risks throwing away the likely benefits to be gained of a union which resolves differences peacefully and politically, thereby prospering. The alternative means of resolving disputes was tried in 1914-18 and again in 1939-44 and I, for one, am thankful that my generation has not had to go through that. Please, no returning to the "good old days".

I'd warn those pinning their hopes on being able to change the EU, we've not been able to do much to fundimentally change the way it works in the 30-40 years we've been a part of it. If we stay, that'll be one less bargaining chip that we'd have in our favour - regardless of why people vote to stay, it'll be interpreted as a ringing endorsement of all that the EU does

To remain offers the chance to leave in 5 years time. To leave now does not. Vote remain. The EU needs major reform and if it fails to adjust we will all lose out. Both campaigns have been a disgrace in terms of having a high regard for truth but we are now on a knife edge. Vote remain and then ensure that reform takes place. Many people in other nations want the same reforms. Free movement of people has gone too far. We need to be able to control the number of people coming to Britain and coming to the EU. Britain must now lead the reform campaign from within the EU. The EU needs to slow down and perhaps stop the growth of the EU in terms of the number of countries in it. At the moment Turkey as a member is a step too far. Britain needs to get the EU to stop corruption and the high level of wealth redistribution taking place within and between different EU countries that currently lacks widespread support. We need to revisit "Ever closer union" of all member states. Times have changed. There are now too many states, too many different cultures, languages and religions to make this work well. By all means lets have a federal relationship but a Europe of the nations is not the same as the United States of America. If Europe refuses to reform then we should use the next 5 years to better prepare for exit but we should not, this week, take a giant leap into the unknown from which there will be no turning back.
