Are You In Recovery Or Are You In Discovery? By James D. Flynn

Q. What are the characteristics of someone who is still in discovery?

A. People who are still in the discovery phase of their addiction may be aware of the fact that their addiction is causing them problems but they are ambivalent about quitting. They continue to entertain many rationalizations and justifications for their addictive behaviors. They continue to minimize the negative consequences and maximize the benefits of using alcohol and drugs within their own minds. This is often described as being in denial. They are unable or unwilling to acknowledge the fact that they are no longer able to use alcohol or drugs safely. They continue to experiment with controlled drinking and drug use, repeating the same mistakes over and over again, expecting different results. They will not, or can not, recognize the futility of trying to manage their addiction on their own, without outside help. They continue to believe that somehow, someday, they will be able to drink and drug safely. The grim reality of their dilemma hasn’t really sunk in yet. Many will continue this exercise in futility until they are in jails, mental institutions, or dead.

Q. What are the characteristics of someone who is in recovery?

A. Some who is in recovery recognizes that it’s ‘their own best thinking’ that has kept them trapped in the vicious cycle of addiction. They are finally willing to acknowledge that their way is not working. They become willing to try someone else’s way for a while. They look towards people who have some real world experience and success with overcoming their addictions. They may seek out professional help on their own, without being forced, coerced, or mandated. They become open to suggestions, and they begin to follow in the footsteps of those who have successfully recovered. They finally recognize and acknowledge the need for total abstinence. They know that they cannot take that first drink or drug safely. They begin to adopt a lifestyle that centers around and supports their freedom from active addiction. Once a person commits to adopting and maintaining such a lifestyle, they are said to be in recovery.
