You REALLY Don't Have A $$ Problem!

I could have titled this article "How One Idea Can Change Your Life!" Why? Keep reading.

Many years ago, I had a conversation with one of my mentors about what I perceived to be a "money problem." He listened intently as I shared my woes and lamented my seemingly insurmountable financial situation. By the time I finished, I knew I had captured his very heart and soul. I knew he was going to pull out his checkbook and with tears in his eyes scribble out at least a few hundred dollars to contribute to my cause. Yet, as you can probably tell, that is not how the story continued. My wise old sage looked up at me and stated with great conviction and enthusiasm, "Oh, you don't have a money problem, you have an idea problem!"

Like young Jim Rohn's mentor, Mr. Earl Shoaf, my mentor shared a principle that has stayed with me all of my life. In tough times as well as in flourishing times, I have been reminded of the wisdom in simply "having a plan!" Realizing, of course, it's got to be the right plan.

In all honesty, I've taken the concept of the "plan" a step further by creating an acronym: "P.L.A.N. = Perpetual List (of) Actions Needed." I have used this concept to inspire hundreds in my course on "How To Get Hired In 90 Days or Less...at ANY Age!"

My own inspiration for the concept came after reading a book by the late Dr. Robert Schuller, titled The Peak to Peek Principle.

In summary, Dr. Schuller, explains that when we overcome heartaches and challenges to reach a goal in life, at work, etc., it is akin to arriving at the PEAK of a mountain after an exhausting climb. Once there, we look around and get a PEEK at all of the other mountain PEAKS that have yet to be conquered. It is with this motivation we are able to muster the will; the strength; the intestinal fortitude to attack the next challenge(s) head-on!

I use "perpetual" in the formula because just as Dr. Schuller implies that there is never just one 'mountain' to overcome, truth is, once we satisfy, or come to the end of one list, we get a view (in our mind's eye) of another challenge waiting in the wings and begin to create a totally new list.

So, How Does All of This Relate to NOT Having a Money Problem?

I found a quote by the late Howard Thurman, which uncovers the real reason we have "idea" problems.

Although most Americans don't know the name Howard Washington Thurman, he was an African-American author, philosopher, theologian, educator, and civil rights leader. Ebony Magazine, called Thurman one of the 50 most important figures in African-American history. In 1953 Life Magazine, rated Thurman among the twelve most important religious leaders in the United States. In all, he is credited with having published over 20 books.

The blatant challenge of Howard Thurman, is to connect your passion and your purpose in such a way that, like Martin Luther, others come to 'watch you burn!'

The unfortunate truth is that too many of us get up every day and go to jobs we hate; we are of service to no one, with no real expectancy of making a difference in the lives of others, or sadly, in our own lives as well. We have an idea problem!

I know, you've probably heard this all before. You may have even said it yourself. However, this time will be different. Why? Because I've got a NEW idea that will help you!!!

Can you dare to believe that buried right here, deep in the bowels of LinkedIn, is a solution for all things you define as "money problems?" Now, before you say "No, final answer" hear me out.

I get it, you came to LinkedIn to find...a job? Connections? Contract opportunities, etc.? Someone told you "LinkedIn is like FB, but for business!" And while you can certainly find a job and all of those other things, I'm hoping for more for you. I'm hoping you find a NEW idea that makes you "come alive" and share your true self with the world!

I've been very fortunate all of my life to make the acquaintance of highly successful people. I was a United States Senate Page. I worked for a United States Congresswoman. The movie FAME is about my high school (my class!). I've played in some of the most notable music houses in New York. I've written and produced radio commercials in 32% of the world.

I've been featured on TV, radio, in newspapers, and in national magazines. I've even had success with a product I brought over from China dubbed "MyMousephone!"

This time in my life is no different. You see, I work a job because I truly love what I do. I help others through my job, and I help myself through my investments and ideas. Fact is, I offered a service as a contractor, and ended up being offered a job! Why? Because I had a NEW idea which solved...wait for it...somebody else's idea problem! So, I make it work.

I'm not bragging or being smug, nor am I trying to impress you. Indeed, I am trying to impress upon you the importance of "coming alive!" The importance of solving your idea problem, so you too, can begin to earn what you're worth!

I'll tell you a short story, and let you go on with your day/night, whatever it happens to be where you are reading this.

Two catastrophic events changed my life...for the good! The first, was 9/11. Emotionally, I was devastated as I watched the World Trade Center crumble. This was a place I had fond memories of. I received my first check for more than $10,000.00, on the 103rd floor. I had dined at the "Top of the World" restaurant on the 110th floor. I sat in the Director's chair at the base of both towers during the filming of King Kong!

However, when those towers came down, my financial and home life hit rock bottom as well. You see, at the time, I was a government contractor on a project for the FBI. I was a team leader and frankly, things were going quite well. So well in fact, I had recently put a down payment on a piece of land. This was where we were going to build a home for me and my family. Or so I thought.

Within weeks of that tragic day, my "good government contract" was cancelled. Literally, overnight, my income went from nearly six-figures to $0, and our dreams of having a custom-built home were dashed! It would take two years to recover from that one, fateful day. Why? Because I had an idea problem!

Fast-forward to the next calamity: the "Great Recession of 2008" (officially recorded as December, 2007 - June, 2009). Foolishly, I quit my job at the height of this national financial crisis. My "plan" was to work for an organization I was affiliated with, only to find out they were not 'in a position' to pay me a real salary with benefits. To say this put a strain on my relationships, especially within my family, would be an understatement.

I was able to land another government contract, but it too, was short lived. This, coupled with the fact that the home we were buying from a private seller was foreclosed on (we were served with the notice from the Sheriff the day before Thanksgiving) because the seller had been socking away the mortgage payments instead of paying the bank...which was also failing!!!

I struggled for quite some time, ended up moving in with friends, and took odd jobs to try and make ends meet. I often say things were so bad, I couldn't buy a job! Again, about two years in, I was able to climb up from rock bottom and start over.

What did I do in both of those instances that made a difference? And, more importantly, how would I turn things around quicker if faced with the same type of challenge again? (God forbid!!!) Two years' of setback can take its toll on a family. As well, you truly find out who your friends are, and aren't, when dire straits become your norm! The one thing which made the difference, was a NEW idea!

If you keep telling yourself "there must be a better way" you're wrong! You don't need a better plan, you need a whole NEW plan!
