You Really Can Self-Quarantine Creatively (I hope!)

So I'm in Del Mar, California, arguably one of the most beautiful and low-key beach communities in Southern California. I moved here from La Jolla several months ago and am sequestered in a cozy cottage on blocks from the beach right in the Village. I rented the place for the summer...a miracle in itself blocking off that much time...usually. However, with everything like bookings washed away from the horrific Coronavirus pandemic...there actually are some opportunities, also.

Take for instance the $90,000 BMW 640i Convertible I'm sitting in...it's a rental from Turo, the ride sharing app for privately owed cars, often on the scale of my ride here. I was a customer of this particular owner before and rented a cool Mustang convertible last time. He has 15 cars and guess what..right now, I'm his only customer so being an entrepreneur, I asked for a "deal" for a longer term rental....and he quickly agreed to the incredible price of $45 per day with unlimited mileage and full insurance coverage.

Today I "closed" a pretty significant transaction by "acquiring" control of the Board of one of the country's first and most well-run "Cannabis Churches" located on the famous Melrose Ave. in LA. This unique vertical in the "Religious Institution" field represents a significant force in bringing large charitable bequests to many of the underserved as well as a semblance of serenity and well-being to the Church's membership. Like many things that I do...making a large investment in a completely new field to me appears counterintuitive to "common sense" in one of the most fearsome economic downturns in America's history. Par for the course for yours truly. :)

Del Mar has 4000 residents. The stores and restaurants, save for take-out, are shuttered. I managed to find a couple of places that I can get my daily intake of hot vanilla lattes (thank goodness!) and am maintaining the "social distancing" requirements with ease as I sip my latte...there simply aren't very many people at all around here. The beaches are closed by edict of the Governor so trying to find a bench in a nice area to sit away from people is a daily task but certainly not terribly hard.

I picked Del Mar and La Jolla, not to mention stays in Ocean Beach, Solana Beach, Cardiff By-The-Sea and Encinitas because I can walk everywhere. On the occasional time I actually need to go outside of where I live, I take Lyft or Uber. I also recently purchased an eBike with nearly a 50 mile pedal-assist range...plenty for me. However, I really haven't been able to see the extensive natural beauty of the miles and miles of coastline of these beach communities of Southern California...until now.

The ordered lockdown of everyone to remain inside and off the beaches has not yet encompassed being outside in the glorious weather with the top down, no traffic on the roads per se and simply taking in Mother Nature at its finest. Fresh air is still free as is our right to drive unimpeded throughout my glorious adopted home of California.

Here's my message to you all...don't whine about what is missing. Embrace what you have in front of you and just live your life. As the old saying goes about the calamity facing us now..."This too shall pass."

Hi Ken. Since we met when we were at Harvard (has it really been 34 years ago?!) you've known me since my late 20s and followed my adventures. I operate in "chaos" better than most and actually an busier than I've ever been in my 44 years as a start-up entrepreneur. Now...if we can all stay healthy...the journey is really quite "adventurous" right now!
