Are you ready for winter?
I had an interesting chat last week with a maintenance manager friend of mine. Thought it was worth sharing…
I told him how some of our guys made an offshore visit not so long ago after an explosion. The rig had used their own engineers for service work, but they’d completely missed some critical problems with the engine.
The engine would take several attempts to start, but this meant unburnt fuel would work its way into the exhaust. After being sat there for a while, it ignited, causing some serious damage.
Not only did a new silencer need to be made, but the engine required a major overhaul, putting it out of service for several months.
I know that my maintenance manager friend isn’t the only one relying on his own engineers to notice problems like this, but we want our friends and colleagues to be as safe as they can be as they go about their work, which is why I’m sharing this little story with you.
Couple of things then:
- if you’re relying on your own engineers to spot this sort of thing, share the story with them today. Don’t wait.
- if you’d like a specialist sub contractor to complete a full health check on your engines, get in touch. I’d be happy to help.
As we approach winter, engine problems do become more exposed, so now is the time to take action and improve engine uptime.
