Are you ready for Windows 11?
Are you ready for Windows 11?
Introduction
Windows 11 is the latest operating system by Microsoft.? It is the first fully AI enabled OS, providing built-in support for co-pilot and other embedded AI features. Windows 11 is more secure than Windows 10 with enhanced malware detection built into the operating system – leveraging AI and threat intelligence to detect and prevent cyber-attacks.
Windows 10 is formally end of support on the 14th October 2025.? Any Windows machines that remain will only be updated with an Extended Security Update (ESU) at the cost of $61 per machine.? Converted to £ this is £48 per device.? If we take an average of 7000 devices per NHS Trust (220) this results in a national cost of £74m.?
This is a totally unaffordable position for the NHS in the current climate and will result in a national security issue.? Another concern is that this cost doubles in year 2 to £96 and triples in year 3 to £144.? If all NHS devices stayed on Windows 10 by year 3 the ESU cost would be £222m.
Microsoft has been clear around the support for Microsoft 365 which will also end support on Windows 10 on the 14th October 2025.? This leaves organisations in a difficult position, especially if they are reliant on office enabled cloud services.? It appears volume licensed versions of office are unaffected (2016, 2019) but this has not been the direction of travel for some time and organisations have been guided to the cloud offering.
Side by side specifications (64-bit)
The specifications for the two versions of Windows are below.
From the above you can see that Windows 11 has a far greater RAM and Storage need than its predecessor.? But the main concern comes from the enhanced Trusted Platform Module requirement.
Trusted Platform Module (TPM)
The issue with Windows 11 comes with the need for a TPM 2.0 Chip.? This chip provides enhanced security, fixing the cold boot attack issues with the previous version of TPM.? This is a necessary update for any device that gets lost or stolen as TPM 1.2 can be infiltrated and data can be extracted from these devices.
How Dell can help?
At dell we provide end to end services for rapid migration and provide best in class upgrades of devices to Windows 11.? Our service teams have years of NHS experience deploying devices to the front-line in the most clinically critical areas.? Over the last year we have been working with Integrated Care Systems to realise economies of scale, through the standardisation of equipment.
