?
If your unicorn appears, are you ready?? I talk to attorneys every day who tell me, “I’m not looking, but…” Then they go on to describe their unicorn position – the mythical job where the work is exactly what you want, the hours are easy, and the comp is above market.? Describing a unicorn is an easy way to get a lazy recruiter off the phone.? It’s fun to make a recruiter squirm with a potential quixotic task.? However, let me ask you this:
If your unicorn actually appeared, would you be ready for it?
How quickly would you be able to get your resume, deal sheet, writing samples, or whatever else to your recruiter so they could present you to that firm?? If you’re thinking, “I’ve got a resume from my last move right here, I could get everything together in five minutes,” then you’re most likely setting yourself up for failure or disappointment.? Keeping your resume updated is essential if you want to be ready for opportunity when it knocks.
I get it though, it takes time – which you don’t have – and because it’s not urgent, it’s the easiest thing to put off until you to have extra time.
Here’s what I suggest: use the schedule send function in your email.? Start an email thread with yourself, and take three minutes to jot down notes about the recent work you’ve been doing. ?What are the things which have been impactful, or show your growth?? Be specific about the tasks you completed and the effect your work had.? Then instead of sending the email to yourself right away, schedule it to be sent to you in a couple months, or whatever the best frequency for your practice is.? When the email is delivered, take three minutes, and do it again.?
If your unicorn ever appears, you can find your email thread with all your notes in your draft emails and update your resume in 20 minutes, instead of taking hours over the course of a couple days, or worse a week or two.

Unicorns are rare, and you may never actually see one, but if you do, you better be ready to saddle up and ride!
